Could be marks from a vice. But there are no similar markings on the front and no apparent reason for a need to use a vice. But it's interesting that Sauer was also a small weapons manufacturer...

Yes but on stock work the diamonds are left raised not indented as on this hilt I have similar marks on a colt pistol grip.Maybe other side had the benifit of a soft jaw who knows ?
as before it is still a great dagger from Suhl where they seemed to make a better product

Sorry if I misled you. I didn't intend to suggest that the grip was intentionally checkered. What I am suggesting is that the marks were caused by pressure against a stock. But who knows? The photo makes them seem larger than they are.
