From the photos posted, it looks authentic, but the condition is rough, which diminishes the collectibility and the value. Photos of the blade and closeups of the chain would help.

Well,it's an authentic "Type I" dagger. I only know of one dagger maker that made iron/steel guards(Helbig)and I'm unaware they ever made M36 daggers. The M36's, as issued, carry no maker marks, as a rule, so it's possible, at the very least, that Helbig guards were used on yours. I personally have never seen or heard of an M36 with these guards, but that means nothing. Looks like it may be a rare variation of sorts.

Sorry, but I want to figure out your opinion - Late production of Type I? In other words - the late type of the initial line?
Have anybody seen or heard the M36 crossguards made of steel or aluminium?

RedsunofRussia, if you are interested, there is a set of iron-based crossguards on eBay for sale by a reputable seller. They may or may not fit your dagger, but you may wish to check them out under "German dagger."

Steel crossguards like those are typical to Helbig daggers.
