Well put Eric...sad but true.... double standards...petty infighting....people with agendas......and far too many egos....check your egos when you login...we are all equals here...just because you are older does not make you wiser..nor does having more funds....a bigger collection....or even having read more books ...just because you are listed in an Author's credit list does not make you anything...bought my first and only "bad" SS dagger off a Max charter member...certified....mentioned in reference book credits....etc.....cheers

These are sorta par for the course on any forum of this variety and most of us have become used to it. IMO: By far the biggest fault with this forum has been the unwillingness of the owner to safeguard previous information that's been posted so it's now lost. Jim

Hi to clarify.. the dagger was purchased many, many years ago and locally...not at a show and the dealer is now deceased...but yes I took it back within one week....funny enough the only two other times that I was "bitten" in this hobby...so I have been fortunate...were also from well know Max certified dealers..none bought at the Max however...in all three cases the items were shown to recognized and respected men in the hobby for their opinions and the consensus was bad in all instances...never got screwed by anyone privately or by "no names" at shows...just by these three...and I am certain that they all knew....

of course they knew,,,if they are a "certified max dealer" does the warranty of authenticity only pertain to max show purchases??...i would think that if you bought from a certified dealer, than you should be able to return said item for a full refund anytime, anywhere where this dealer is set up,,,,unless the dealer is deceased,as you have stated that one is...

You were fortunately learn they were bad. Imagine how many people who aren't in the know get duped because some stupid title give them enough security to shell out big bucks without thought...
I also agree with Jim. Why have they allowed thousands of threads to disappear. The first five years of GDC had the best information of it's existence thus far IMHO. Sadly all that has been lost??

Lets review the "MAX Certified Dealer" situation one more time. What are the qualifications to become one? Pay $100 and agree to abide by their rules. You DON'T have to demonstrate you know squat about 3rd Reich militaria and judging by what I have witnessed and have been told this is the case in some situations. My analogy: Would you get yout taxes prepared by a Certified Public Account that became certified by just paying $100? Jim

quote: Originally posted by Fred Prinz (aka "Frogprince"): Expertise comes in many forms, and is not just limited to buying, selling, and owning. As Gaspare mentioned, I also have seen some monster collections in multiple areas with the good mixed in with the bad. Owned by guys who were otherwise clueless - that had accepted somebody’s word that the item was good because he (the seller) said that he was an “expert”. For some of them, if a forum such as this one had existed back then, it could have helped them avoid some very, very, costly mistakes.
But the 800 pound gorilla that’s in the room. That does not seem to have been addressed directly, is the fact that a lot of new or potentially new collectors are getting turned off by all of the fakes (which includes altered items). Face to face, that is one of the very serious concerns of these new guys who will be the ones that are carrying on the collecting tradition. And they don’t necessarily trust all of the dealers (or old timers) either, with some of them having very strong feelings.
Then, when you add in a bad economy, I’m not surprised that things have slowed down. In the near term I don’t expect much change, as even more fakes are coming into the marketplace, and the economy is still unsettled. But once things really do get turned around, I would hope that those who are now staying away return. And that they can continue to come to the forums for the best possible opinions in whatever area that they are collecting. FP
future of gdc..this period is just a bump in the road,, I couldn't agree more with the FP. As well, it's Summertime. A fine line between the thrill of an epic discovery and the lump that forms when your treasure/repro is shot down in flames. It's worth it! Arm yourselves with knowledge. I'm thankful for the ( free) expertise that I've received on this specialized forum. Cheers gents, Pauli
