Hello guys we are all aware of SA/NSKK scabbard repaints I have seen and handled many examples of maker NSKK daggers within later plated steel painted scabbards is this combination accepted within the collecting community as being "period"? Thanks cheers and best, Ryan

Hi, Ryan,
I can share what I know or have observed:
- Firstly all NA/NSKK/SS scabbard shells are made of steel (except Eickhorn prototypes) - two halves brazed together.
- Both SA and NSKK were produced from the start with "anodized" scabbards.
- Some early SS daggers by Schutelhoffer had painted black scabbards. A flat black paint.
- Both SA and SS scabbards shifted to painted scabbards with steel fittings under RZM
- As the NSKK grew and men transferred from the SA, early SA scabbards were repainted black. Same with RZM SA scabbards.
- As they became scuffed or "anodizing" wore off, scabbards were painted.
The only combination that is suspect is early dagger plus painted scabbard with steel fittings.
Get any good pictures ?

Thanks Dave I have seen some "respected" dealers sell early maker marked NSKK with plated RZM scabbard combinations My example is stone mint scabbard fittings match the nickel dagger fittings in tone and the scabbard throat perfectly fits the lower cross guard no gaps dagger is SW for NSKK motorogruppe Sudwest a proper NSKK district would it not make sense that an individual might purchase a later plated and factory painted scabbard when they chose to retain their original dagger when SA repaints are less than perfect ?? the community accept field upgrade chained NSKK daggers and maker marked chained SS cheers and best, Ryan

Anything could happen including your scenario, Ryan.
Collectors tend to put more faith in combinations that are mentioned or photographed in period literature ... or found in larger quantities.
But individuals could purchase new scabbards that fit well if they went back to the original maker.
