Nice pair of Luftwaffe rings depicting the famous Ju-87 dive-bomber, AKA the terrifying Stuka that spearheaded so many attacks in the opening years of the war. The first ring was made in Northern Italy for German Stuka pilots. It is brass and plated (nickel or chrome) and the Stuka motif is polished brass. There was also a very similar ring made for Italian Stuka pilots. The latter have the word, 'Picchiatello' on the cartouche, the Italian for 'Woodpecker', which was the name of the Ju-87 in Italian service. Personally, I think that the aircraft depicted on this ring is a pretty poor rendition of a Stuka. Maybe they looked better when new and not bashed by wear. The second ring also brass but with a silver wash. It is a two-piece construction, held together a rivet and was made for Stuka pilots stationed in the Luft Verteidigungs (Air Defence) Zone (LVT) - West. Neither pattern is seen much anymore. Incidentally, the word 'Stuka' is derived from a a contraction of 'Sturzkampfflugzeug', or 'dive bomber' in German. For those interested, there are a couple of old posts on Stuka rings here on the forum. we used to be in to saying 'Wow; thats really rare,, or thats a common pattern etc. etc. .... Fact now is,,,ALL period authentic rings are rare! Think how old they are! For something like a tiny ring to survive I still find amazing!! Your LVZ West ring IS rare though and in good shape! . Anyway, that's in good condition too and a nice catch now hardly seen for sale anywhere! Great to see both,,thanks for the treat! G.

Thanks, Ric. That's a cracker but, like mine, I don't think the plane looks anything like a Stuka. Thanks for posting it. Stephen

Stephan,
they are all crudely made and lack details, so hard to determine which plane they represent
