Many of my wifes family are currently fighting for their freedom in Ukraine.. Her nephew just got done of 1 1/2 tours of front-line duty... Men in their late 30s. Most with just hand weapons go against tanks on the Eastern front,,,,and win!
Last month he asked to come with his wife to stay with us for some R&R before going back and we immediately said yes.. A little paperwork and favors called in and he is here all legal like!
He had done some translating for me some years ago when I would go to Ukraine and 'pick'... When he got here he was very disappointed to learn that most of my collection had gotten lost in the 2 bad floods we experienced. BUT very glad my rings made it and he remembered many of them... He brought me his unit insignia and a signed flag from the eastern front. While talking I noticed his ring!....
Most of their group came from the same area of Ukraine. The officer in charged has a program that IF you want a unit ring he would pay half and when they got home pay the other half and the ring would be there.... So of course he ordered one...
- *** I am proud to show you a true war heroes unit ring.. No hallmark but he was told it was made from their local artisan/jewelry in 'coin silver'...........

yes, 168th Infantry... He joined early and at that time he himself had to pay for his rifle and most of his protective equipment!! They are getting refitted, boosted and reassigned.... All have to do a 18 month tour.. Many do it and then they are done. But, when home help out in some fashion... Many 're-up' for another tour.
- The ring is a nice sold piece and with very good detail. It is a beautiful ring with a silver color of a .900 or sterling. Has a great finish inside and out... He has seen 3 other different units so far. All basically the same pattern with just the different unit number and cartouche.......

So our house guests have caught a flight to see the 'left coast' for a while.... When he was leaving, he presented me with 2 flags he had carried with him to the eastern front [ national flag & OUN flag] .. I am truly honored to receive them both. It means so much to the family since we have had losses as young as 12 yrs old. We explained to him there is no greater honor than to fight for your country and those that have died will be remembered forever as heroes of the country as well as himself.. ,,,,,,, anyway Here are the flags,, a shot of my related rings and a old link with them and more: https://forum.germandaggers.com/ubb...amp;Words=OUN&Search=true#Post334082
