I wonder what kind of agrassive products are used to make it look real. I see added iron rust all over a bit.

Stephen, it is always interesting to learn from these rings. Thanks for posting

Thanks Benten. Yes, with ring collecting, every day is a school day! Ratisbon's might be an honourable company but, from following their ring auctions for the last few weeks, I estimate that 50% are bad. I wonder who assesses these items before they go for sale.

IT is a very good copy!!

Remember, those are supposed to be oak leaf's around cartouche!

The detail isn't there. But the inside behind design is one of the things you usually want to see... There is also a fault at top in-between wings.... Close but no cigar!!

They do all sorts of things to age these rings. As mentioned by Benten,Powdered iron rubbed in for a while... A drop of mild acid here and there,,to actually burying in back yard years for a few months with chemicals!

Guys, there's another Luftwaffe ring being auctioned by Ratisbon's. Starting price is €2,000. Personally, I don't like it. Looks like a fancy biker ring to me. An expensive, fancy biker ring. It might even have been made by the same person who made the ring that starts this topic.

Here's a link:
https://www.ratisbons.com/59th-cont...ak-leaves-winner-luftwaffe-ring-800.html

(Note that there is also another SS Honour Ring in the same auction. Starting price, €7,800.)

The description is as follows:

"Description
Generalleutnant of the Luftwaffe Martin Harlinghausen served as commander of the "Seeflieger" (seaplane squadron) on Mallorca during the Spanish Civil War (Legion Condor). For his service, he was awarded the Spanish Cross in Gold with Diamonds. During World War II, he served as Geschwaderkommodore of Kampfgeschwader 26 and was also involved in the campaign in Africa. In the last two years of the war, Harlinghausen commanded the II. Fliegerkorps in the Mediterranean and Luftwaffenkommando West.
Awards:
- Spanish Medalla de la Campaña
- Spanish Cross in Gold with Diamonds
- Luftwaffe Combined Pilot's and Observer's Badge with Diamonds
- 1939 Iron Cross 1st and 2nd Class
- Wound Badge in Black
- Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves
- "AFRIKA" cuff title

Personal ring of Generalleutnant Martin Harlinghausen. Made of genuine silver. "800" silver hallmarked inside. On the top is a black Onyx featuring the squadron emblem of the Seeflieger Staffel 88. It has no chips. Also decorated on each side with a Luftwaffe eagle. A nice ring! Inner diameter: 19.46 mm.

Imagine making custom Nazi rings, pair them with made up provenances and sell them as originals for thousands of euros / dollars.

What horrid side eagles.. The maker would be shot!..

And glass cartouche,,the easiest thing to fake.. Terrible inner band finish, bad looking cartouche , and etc. etc. It has a good description of it and the man,,,but NO actual provenance!! Not a high end ring for a man like that.. I would let someone else get that one!

They have a bunch of good and bad mixed.. They want my rings at the MAX to put in the US auction,,,,not sure what I'm going to do at the moment..

As noted, I wonder if this ugly, over-blackened brute was made by the same guy as the ring that starts this topic. He's onto a winner. I have asked myself a few times if Ratisbon's has someone who assesses the Third Reich rings that they offer for auction. I suspect they don't...

I don't think they have any 'experts' to vet anything..... They wrote such a big deal about that ring but there is not one single bit of provenance anywhere on it!!

That is nowhere close to a "nice ring"... The eagles head,,and claws you can't even make out!! It is from a horrible carved out piece of wax then cast.. Just a terrible job.. Did I mention I don't like it grin wink
