Good day gentlemen
What do you think about this very plain Eickhorn hunting dagger? Vintage etc The handles appear to be horn. Obviously needs a bit of a clean.

If the grips are green as they appear they are prob water buffalo. I'd guess the piece to be about 80 to 100 yrs old.
I Always have daggers to trade for fine Indian relics or bowie knives.

I found this on the thread "Period Reference", Hunting, Forestry, and Shooting Forum: Eickhorn Nr. 362 which is similar with Hirsch horn handle instead of Water Buffalo. (Eickhorn catalog about 1932).

The Carl Eickhorn maker's mark above, referred to as the double oval trademark (# 39), on page 171 of "German Knife and Sword Makers, 1850-1945" by J. Anthony Carter and notes that the double oval trademark was introduced before the era of the Third Reich.
It notes that a similar mark, (# 36) is found on the May 1931 export catalogs. The # 39 Carl Eickhorn maker's mark is found on my Nr. 1456 presentation Hirschfanger dated March 7, 1931.
It is possible the Nr. 1456 Hirschfanger was ordered with this date on the presentation blade but made later.
Note that these marks have an X instead of the 2 stars.

On the 3rd page of the "Let's see something" thread, which can be found on the 2nd page in the "Hunting, Forestry and Shooting" forum, Gerrit1963 posted on 10/21/2021 a beautiful Carl Eickhorn hunting dagger with the # 39 Carl Eickhorn maker's mark.
Note that this Carl Eickhorn maker's mark (# 39) is on a blade etched with "Schutzenkonig 1932".

I would like to make a correction: the above Carl Eickhorn maker's mark and the mark on my Carl Eickhorn Nr. 1456 is not maker's mark # 39 from Carter's book but is closer to maker's mark # 36, found on the May 1931 export catalogs, sometimes referred to as the triple-oval.
I have found an image of a Carl Eickhorn double oval maker's mark # 39 on the BCN Bayonet forum on page 1, under the thread "Eickhorn Etched Bayonets" posted on 01/18/2014 by JohnZ. This # 39 Eickhorn mark is found on an etched bayonet blade dated 1935.
Another version is the Carl Eickhorn double oval maker's mark # 45 with a larger and heavier squirrel with smaller ears dating to about 1934-1935. Note that these marks have an X instead of the Stars.
