Had a email question a while ago about the name 'Big head skull'. Sorry but I'm just getting to it now [better late than never]..

---- Well years ago 1960s, 70s when rings weren't so popular to collect , or there just weren't that much in circulation..

I'd hear a collector at a show say "dam what a big head that skull ring has".. 20 years ago or so here when they started popping up I'll call them 'Big Head' skulls..

These are the first ones the name was applied to.. There are other rings that have skull just about the same size, but they had other distinguishing things that stuck out which gave them a different name..

- So,, first I'd say this is one of the earliest. This is a big hunky ring with a big hunky skull!! So called it WestWall Big Head no. 1..

These are pretty hard to find even back in the day ans rarely seen around..

Here is the next.. A later pattern.. Big Head WestWall no.2

Cool looking ring there have been a few that did Not have West Wall on it!
- I've never inspected one it hand but have seen good photos and would say authentic.. So you will see this pattern mainly,,,and, the same exact pattern but with out the West Wall. We could say that would be Big Head WW type 2 [no west wall on it..

and thirdly,,,we have this pattern.. Sorry but I'm too lazy to get to mine and photograph so this will have to do..

This is Big Head pattern 3......, Part of a series that usually featured a Luft badge on the cartouche...

IF any of you guys that have a ring that mainly features just a skull and its big please post and we'll assign it a number... OR,,,have better photos of any of these please go right ahead and post.. This is invaluable to new collectors to study and have some type reference without having to go thru the whole pinned skull topic above [which is excellent!!]..

Good topic Gaspare. I remember those two rings of Odal's. Here is my Big Head Skull. I think posted it here previously. It is a big heavy brute. The silver mark is 835.
Cheers,
Stephen

Ric,,,,West Fronts are rare to get!! Not necessary a big head but great to see!!

S Vb,,, yeah those Big Head 1s are a hunky clunky ring.. [I've seen them with gem eyes] ... They are big!,,and hard to find!!

- Hardest is probably the BH type 2 without the WW on the sides. Just has oaks all way round.. Big Head type 2 variant!! ,,,There is a photo of one here somewhere!

and believe it or not there are reproductions of all of them, except the BH type2 variant [well at least I haven't seen one]........

........

Hello G.,

to make up for it, here's another one that for sure well deserves to belong to "big" category.

Ric.

P.S. it formerly belonged to Marc (Wolf100) collection.

Here's my attempt to give an idea of the whole ring.......in spite of horrible pics (my apologies)

Btw, big skull ring for......a big former wearer.....please notice resizing probably made by a silver alloy (red arrows).
