Some DDay (or days shortly following) photos. Not the usual ones - POWs waiting to be taken to the UK.

When you think about it, maybe they were the lucky ones !

I wonder what they were allowed to keep? If not much, why hang on to a gasmask canister? It might be good for storage if they had anything to store.

Joe,

I'd bet the gas mask was long gone but the canister maybe had spare socks or underwear or glasses plus maybe a chocolate bar or half a salami. Important stuff wink

What could they keep ? Good question but I've never ever heard of regulations. Knowing the Army, there HAD to be a regulation grin

Probably it boiled down to what their captors decided when they got caught.

and a lot of stuff got confiscated when they got to their 'permanent' camps... I had seen a list once of what was taken from them once they hit the UK and/or states................

Looks like a nice decaled, chicken wire helmet in the last picture. Wonder if it became a souvenir.

It probably did. Some children in England probably played with it and it could be lingering in a filled-in backyard bomb shelter or an attic. There were millions of them with no commercial value at all.
