Good afternoon,

I've recently seen quite a few of these SS type knots on some dealer sites as well as on eBay. I don't recall seeing this this type of knot until the last year or so and I'm curious if other collectors have an opinion or information on them

Thanks,
John

Hello Fitzer, these knots (there are variants) are commonly looked at as postwar phantasy pieces. They pop up from time to time, also in variants. They are called SSknots or Bahnschutz knots
The knots are very well made, some material (eg the "crown" of the acorn) or the look of the black band stiching somehow does not conform what we are used to see in III R items.
For what it is worth: All I know for ABSOLUTELY SURE is: About 30 years or more ago I got contact with a local tailor who had (for these times) enourmous, unbelievable quantities of SSand other branches items, unworn, mint. Eg. those SScollarpatchs with screws, up to Gruppenführer and higher. TN troddels in all colors, Uniform eagles for different branches. He had them bagwise. And ALL of these items, after scrutiny inspection, turned out to be 100% period, original. Not one fake, not one copy. Between all these items I remember that there were two or three of these knots (still bound) which have been for me the only items which could not be determined for sure.
Kind regards,

Thanks Wotan, this is great info. I agree, they are well made but don't appear in any references I am aware of and seem suspect to me. Interesting though that you received the knots as part of a genuine lot. so there is a possibility they are period and that we just don't have enough information about them. Perhaps someone knows more about these knots as I have seen them on trusted sites being sold as authentic. Cheers

Looks like these knots are ORIGINAL: "These SS bayonet troddels have the textured strapping featuring dual sets of twin lines running the length of the strapping. The slide is a black and bullion cord woven and the stem has the crochet-like covering revealing the steel piece below. The bottom ball has a black cap with bottom of bullion and black yarn. The stuffing is a black felt.

These knots originally come from the discovery made in the 1970’s of a couple of large boxes of these knots which were unissued. They are absolutely original and are nice to show off a NCO SS sword or an SS bayonet"

Well for $175 i would say they are not real, they would be substantially more, and sadly as nice as witty is he does sell a lot of wrong bits, especially the enamel signs and flatware
