Hello Kurt, what I can see from these pics the certain dagger and it´s accoutrements are through and through original. Even the hangers (as the dagger) show the proper arcanthus leaves. The portepee is not one of these pimped up with green stripes but a proper army officer´s portepee. Nice rig and neice condition!
Regards,

Just one tip: don´t mess with the leather, imho each try (eg. shoe polish) does make it worse - and up to now there are only very small traces of age.The whole rig looks absolutely untouched.

Customs officers in these 3 period photos have portepee without green stripes.

Hello, I see pics of my personal "...wearing..." collection spread over the net.... sick
Yes, normally this portepee has been worn. Some collectors like to pimp up custom daggers with these portepees with green stipes. I have a lot of "...wearing.." pics of custom officials and in NO one there is a portepee with green stripes.

There are several manfacturers (eg. ALCOSO, HOERSTER and more) which did use this certain grip wire. Perhaps with the soehow distinct scabbard throat and how the scaabbard fittings are fixed gives a clue who could have manufactured bthis dagger.

Regards,

I downloaded your period pictures from this forum today to use in this post. I will not change the portepee, it belongs to this dagger. And thank you very much for help, I bought this dagger a while ago thanks to your positive feedback.
25 years ago I saw a nice custom dagger on the stock market, at that time I didn't know what it was and that it was very rare and $850 seemed like a lot of money for a dagger and I didn't even have that much on me. The dagger kept me awake for 25 years, I regretted leaving it there. Today I paid 3 times as much, but I corrected the mistake at the time and now I will finally be able to sleep in peace. Customs daggers are among the most beautiful daggers.

I agree with Wotan, this rig looks original, untouched and very nice. By any chance, is there a maker mark underneath the crossguard swaz?

Kurt,

From somewhat fuzzy B&W photos, how do you get green stripes ?

Perhaps all came from the custom saber portepee which indeed had (for officers and NCOs) green stripes.

As you all know I do collect contemporary "...wearing..." photographs. And although I do own a lot of custom dagger photographs there is NON with a green striped portepee. On the other hand on postal protection daggers you can notice very well even on fuzzy b&w photographs the red flecking on the cord (and sometimes on the stem). Personally I dare to doubt that these green striped custom portepees ever were produed during the period.
Regards.
