I'm new to the hobby and am considering purchasing a stag handle police bayonet. The cross guard is stamped S.S. 65 and from my little bit of research it would appear that this bayonet was issued to a Schneidemuhl district Schutzpolizei unit. Does this sound right, or am I not close to figuring this marking out?

Welcome, Warden, to GDC.
The Police guys will answer you in a bit. Meanwhile, if you have a photo or two, that will help.

Yes, the Prussian Police (Schutzpolizei) code S.S is for the Schneidemuhl district. Is the upper scabbard fitting also marked "S.S. 65" ?
