Hello. I am new here. I was wondering what is % of the silver in HR. What are the other elements in the alloy. Pretty obvious to me that it is not a 99.9% (too soft) and not 90% (too easily tarnished) silver. Anybody knows what is the origin source of this info and is it accessible to a reader. Thank you.

Hello,

John Pepera once tested his rings and did come to the result:
1934 has 91,1% silver and 8,86% copper
1939 has 90,5% silver and 9,49% copper
1942 has 96,3% silver and 3,7% copper
1944 has 92,8% silver and 7,15% copper.

Thank you very much for your response. Quite a range isn't it? Do you know what kind analysis was used Mr Pepera? Density? Or more sophisticated lab analysis to know for sure what is the second metal?

Giro, welcome to the forum...

Those tests were done many years ago. There has go to be some new information in the new Honor ring book. The author is a member here and sometimes looks in,,maybe he'll comment.

I would think that throughout the HR history there has got to be another metal alloyed in with the Silver and Copper. It's probably in the book...

Any members with the new book and would like to provide the alloy, specs etc. it would be appreciated..

In principle, it doesn’t matter how many impurities there were, I don’t even rule out the possibility that if you make the sample even larger in terms of the composition of the rings, then there will be even more scatter, even within one year

Well, I would rather rule out the possibility that such a jeweler like Gahr will be inconsistent.
Just imagine two HR wearers have different rings in the matter how quickly they tarnish. That would be odd. For example Tiffany's silver is consistently 92.5% pure since 1851.

And I easily admit such deviations

Understood but important to know if the Reichsführer SS would so easily accept such "deviations". I wonder if Gahr ever reported what kind of alloy they were using in their production of the HRs. Mystery to me.

Silver was a restricted use metal during the war... Himmler knew what was being used as it was he that had to approve the allocation of the silver to a private jewelry firm...

-. Don't know if I'm remembering correctly but I think in Dons Black HC book there is an example of a silver approval form [?].....- anyone have the book and can check?-

Don't think it mattered much the exact use of the silver as long as silver was the main metal and the ring looked good.. wink........

Thank you Gaspare
It would definitely be nice to see the page you mentioned. In your previous post you mentioned a new book which brings to light a possible other then copper metal in the HR alloy. Can you be so kind and elaborate what book are you talking about.
Thank you

Just very basic arithmetic. For Gahr to make 15k rings to have a 20×20×20 inch silver cube would be sufficient

- OK,, here is a topic here for the new book. It is very good and very technical.. Not sure if it has the copy of the silver allocation though. , but I do recommend it if these rings are your interest;

The photo attached here below is Don Boyles old book.. IF I remember correctly the silver allocation is in it.. Even though old I recommend this book also if these rings are your thing!

Please, if any member has either, or even just Dons book could they take a look for the silver allocation and maybe post here.. Much thanks..........

- Now the silver you mention. what we are not sure of is,,,did Gahr get 999.9 bullion? or silver already alloyed - 900, 835, 800... Hopefully a member will eventually check in that has the book and help out.............

Interesting. Yes, I am into the ring, I have one, which I bought more than 20 years ago. Not sure if it is authentic or not though. Some experts say No, some aren't so sure. There is some history behind it, but a weak one. Periodically I renew my interest into the analysis of it. This time through the metal composition. If there was a strong evidence that the Gahr's metal composition is consistent then this path could become promising.
XRF is a good technology but the handheld instruments cannot detect unusual elements . The bench tops are very expensive

I agree with the Collector... Post a few ring photos here and the guys here will reach a consensus!

Straight on of skull, couple Runes, behind skull, a partial of engraving. 5 shots or so total.. Neutral background, well lit but no glare, in focus..
- The guys here will know and then you'll know for sure.., Thanks...,G.
