Hello!
I have recently purchased a dagger that I am suspecting is an early NSKK dagger. The scabbard is rough - it is missing the nickel-silver plated tip, but it does have the screw holes. It still has the hanger which is nice. It was manufactured by Aug.Merten Ww. Solingen.
Here are some photos - I want to see if there are any oddities about this dagger.
Any and all input is appreciated!

You have a nice and original SA-dagger by Merten.
The dagger is all fine and in pretty good condition, the scabbard is original but incomplete and the upper fitting got damaged.
You can try to find the missing scabbard piece, but try the fit before buying, because those early ones are not standardized.
You made a good start to a dagger collection, congratulations!

Agree. Good start.
The lower piece of the scabbard should be nickel silver. Screws too.
The hanger clip is not the correct one but of the same vintage. It is from an over-the-shoulder cross strap. The leather and buckle look right.
A little wax on the grip would make it look better. If you buy Renaissance Wax, put 2-3 light coats on the blade and gently wipe them off.

Herman Thank you very much, and thanks for the info. I much prefer the early model daggers, they seem to age a lot better compared to later models.

It seems to me to be a great example of the blade of this type of dagger that I see in excellent condition and with its manufacture clearly visible, despite the faults that the sheath could have, it can be seen that it is an early example and that in any case is always more desirable than a more complete but later period pod.

M5/28 c ...The C being a sub category for this entity / producer / supplier / retailer/ distorubutor by the name of Julius Dinnebier. Not all M5 marked snap clips had a sub catorgory..but some did. M5a - Buttons M5b - Side Hooks M5c - Spring Clasps M5d - Fittings and mounts M5e - Single tongue buckles What I do find missing from that M5/28 producer / etc ... is that only a, b and d are listed as having that sub letter on their wares. IMO Spring clasps is correct for your snap clip ...so when these numbers started first appearing ...they started out with ...EX : .... M5/44 or what ever other number ...and later on it appears the directives may have caught up with the rest of the RZM entities and some other RZM numbers are appearing with these sub category letters. The time frame for this snap clip is around December 1935 The dagger is a nice find Regards Larry

Dave Fishers 8th and final expanded 9 Volume set out of print. A wealth of information showing the RZM in its fullest of content right down to their supplement single permit codes as seen on that clasp. Glad to help out ...but saw that detail the OP asked about any further details that were seen in his photo.
