5219 comes back to Sturmbahnführer Heinrich Petri, born Jan. 4, 1898.

Goldfasan,
I think the the silence is because of two anomalies:
- The guy was was an SS captain in the 1934 list but he has a 1938 dated dagger
- The deeply sunk numbers in the lower guard.

The numbers look odd to me as well, not just deep stamped, but not period looking numerals. A nice looking RZM though. A new lower guard??? Ed

The red flag for me is such a low number on a late dagger

A low number indeed and an oddity to be on a dagger issued years later. That’s said, could it have been a replacement for a dagger severely damaged or lost?
I say this because I once sourced an NPEA dagger that had a very low school number. The dagger however had all the hallmarks of a much later produced dagger but the number was a conundrum. The font was perfect too. I showed it to an advanced collector whose opinion I implicitly trust and the theory was that the dagger was a replacement.
I’d be curious to know what the inside of the crossguard looks like and whether the gunk is all consistent inside or is some missing to reflect recent stamping.

I have researched over 1000s of SS numbers over the years and have never seen this type of font. Also, with a number this low and a rank this high early, it should be a trademarked early dagger with a Roman numeral crossguard IMO.

Agree, Ron,
That's pretty much what I said earlier. What I did not say was that I thought the number was cast into the guard when it was made. I don't see how a guard could be struck that hard and not show signs of bending. I have seen early SS guards where large numbers were struck forcefully enough to bent the guard inward enough to require the wood of the grip to be filed down.
What I'd like to see is the inside of the guard.
