ADJV (Allgemeiner Deutscher Jagdshutz Verein) the National hunting association in Germany from 1878-1934, Sometimes you just have to make a call, have it put into the post or make a 1000 mile round trip by car to pick it up, I chose the later, couldn't chance that it would be damaged, first of it's type that I have ever seen with a real "Urkunde" or "Ehrendiplom" loosely translated to an award certificate, I have owned a number of these "Ehrendiplom" and a fair few Ehren hirschfanger but never had one that actually mentioned a Ehrenhirschfänger as this one does and never the two together. This one comes from the rarely seen Alsace Lorraine area, this area changed hands between France and Germany from 1871 after the Franco Prussian war, again at the end of WW1 to France and again during WWII to Germany and finally ceded back to France after the war so finding an award certificate from the period before the end of WW1 is rare. If there are other ADJV award certificates out there mentioning a Ehrenhirschfanger I'd sure love to see them and even better if you have the Hirschfanger as well.

Thanks to all who have replied, the following is an explanation of the awards of the ADJV for the fight against poaching, this was forwarded to me years ago by a guy in Germany who kindly translated the regulations, Thanks Martin.

The ADJV (Allgemeiner Deutscher Jagdschutz-Verein = General German Hunting protection Association) was founded in 1878 and was the largest association of hunters in Germany until 1934, when the ADJV was forced to merge with the Nazi hunter’s association, the Reichsbund Deutsche Jägerschaft (DJ).

The ADJV had sections (Landesvereine) throughout Germany except for Bavaria. Every State had an own Landesverein (Landesverein Anhalt, Landesverein Braunschweig and so on), while the State of Prussia had several Landesvereine – each in the several provinces of Prussia (Landesverein Brandenburg, Rheinprovinz, Hannover, Nassau, and so on). Each Landesverein had its own (hat) badge.

The ADJV awarded i. a. braveness of hunters and foresters in fights against poachers. Poaching was a severe problem in Germany until the mid 30s – hundreds of hunters and foresters were killed or wounded by poachers (the other side had to pay for it: they were killed in action or were sentenced to death).

The ADJV had an elaborated system (ranking) of awards for rewarding braveness in anti-poaching actions:

- money rewards
- donations in kind
- an Ehrenurkunde (honor diploma)
- the award medal of the ADJV on green ribbon with crossed Hirschfaengers
- the Ehrenhirschfänger (Honor Hirschfänger)
- the Ehrenschild (honor shield)

Spitze! Wonderful artwork on the certificate as well.

And it is especially interesting that it was presented only a few short months before The Guns of August began to roar.

During my times of collecting edged weapons I have seen about two or three hunting or forest daggers together with a document. These might or might not have originally been with the the person who have owned/worn the dagger. Nice but no true cigar.

This combination is something really special! On the dagger AND in the document the same name "Göbel" is mentioned. The document even more has the peculiarity the this certain dagger (!!!) is mentioned "-zum Ehrenhirschfänger-." So not any later added dagger or added document to raise value of a combo BUT a TRUELY, and PERIOD combination. One-of-a-kind.

My congratulations to this exceptional group!

And yes, what we can see of other edged wapons is also a wonderful sight. Thank you for presentation.

Regards,

Thanks to all for your comments, I love finding stuff like this and I truly believe there is more out there to find.
I do have a few more Dula's and other Waidblatts that I keep near to me whilst I'm working.

Cheers

I had the chance to buy an Eickhorn Nr. 783 ADJV Hirschfanger with blued presentation blade. It had the ADJV monogram on the handle between the top and bottom acorns with the 1920's trademark, It was listed for $1,500.00 or best offer for a couple weeks before it sold to best offer in April 2022 on ebay. I blame my older sister who told me: "That's a lot of money". I now lament not buying the Hirschfanger.

1st picture is from the "Eickhorn 1932ish catalog" posted on this site under the tread; "Period reference". This hunting knife with silver scroll (for presentation) and ADJV monogram is listed as Eickhorn Nr. 1127. 2nd picture shows a similar Eickhorn presentation knife without the monogram and was listed on a site called "Germania International" under "Hunting and Shooting in Germany" on page 5.
