An interesting dagger, Dutch.

A Rohm dagger originally, made by Carl Eickhorn, with the inscription now ground off. The blade front has been well cleaned.

I suspect the grip has been refinished as it is shiny and Eickhorn did not varnish their grips. You can also see a darker shadow surrounding the eagle where the refinisher avoided getting too close to the eagle ... which is in great shape.

The crossguards are a bit of a puzzle as they do not have the deep hand enhanced grooves usually found on early Eickhorns. Is there a small number stamped on the underside of the lower guard ?

The scabbard is also a puzzle. In the top photo, the dagger does not fully 'seat' into the scabbard. The upper scabbard fitting looks slightly flatter than the curve of the guard. Perhaps just the photo. The scabbard finish looks like un-lacquered anodizing but I am not sure.

Hi Dave,I looked at the underside of the lower cross guard and no number. As long as it is mostly a WW2 item I'm OK with it. The handle was probably done by the Vet who brought it home? I got it for a decent price so I can tell the new buyer all about the info.I received.I was worried that it had more issues and I would have to send it back. Thanks again Dutchman.

Dutch,

Yes, all pre WWII German made in 1934.

Hard to guess who cleaned it up.Probably, someone just wanted it to look better. Many vets saw these bring-backs as part of history, but to some they were just Nazi Knives, or Kraut Knives. A neighbor of mine had an SA he used for a yard knife. He ground off most of the crossguards and put an edge on the blade. I saw a RAD hewer with a razor edge used for splitting cedar shingles and as a child I had a friend who played with a chained SA or SS dagger. I own a much sharpened early EP&S HJ knife used as a utility knife.
