Collectors

The yr is winding down and I wondered if you found something in 2021 that you were glad to get!

Or something you wished you did!

Another covid yr and a few show shows for folks allowed to travel!

Maybe you went to a show!

I didn't make any!

Maybe a trade you made! Bought from a dealer or friend!

Friends always seem to be easier to deal with!

Show or tell us what you did!

Maybe a hint at what you might do in the new yr!

Hope you all have a great new year and thanks to all that take time to share and post on German Daggers!

Wish all of you a better yr to find goodies!

This is something that popped up over the summer, I was actually sitting at the beach when I first saw it. I already own a bunch of Polizei clamshells but this is different. The waves were good but this was better and I knew I wanted it.

A 3 line dedication from 1930/1931 as a shooting prize. This example must have cost a fortune in the post-Depression Weimar Republik.

And the spine Weyersberg maker mark. I don't collect many bayonets these days but this one was unusual enough to acquire.

Hey Ed,

I was literally wearing a bathing suit when I first saw this blade, having breakfast. Loved it and made arrangements for buying it. I guess you can take a vacation from the daily grind but not from the addiction.

Just goes to show you, it's not just the piece, sometimes the story about it is great.
Congrats

Thank you gents. It wasn’t something that I was looking for, but sometimes you know you want something all the same. Oddly enough, it came from the Isle of Man.

You killed the thread!

Nobody is going to show their new fire bayonet now!

Hard to beat what you showed!

Most collectors just shut the drawer and said heck no! HA!!!!

Come on collectors! I know we can't beat Billys item!

But somebody found someting!

Sorry Pvon! We can all still appreciate the beauty of a nicely conditioned fire bayonet or Polizei pig sticker. Plain or etched, doesn’t matter!

I did get lucky with this one and sometimes it’s all in the cards.

Gents,

The outstanding bayonet shown by Billy aside, I picked up a very interesting German sidearm last year that I think is a Baden Border/customs sidearm (Badischen Seitengewehr). It appears to be a private purchase (Extra-Seitengewehr) so while it is certainly made in the Baden style it is not quite a regulation sidearm. The sidearm was made by Alexander Coppel and has a tiny "AC" maker mark on the lower edge of the blade ricasso as is found on other Coppel edged weapons. While it is not in any Coppel catalog that I have it is clearly a Coppel product from Imperial or Weimar Republic times IMHO.

The plain slab sided blade is 14" long and has a distinct ricasso and a 4" false edge along the back at the spear point. The brass hilt has a re-curved guard and the distinctive pommel is shaped like that of the M/71 Pionierfaschinenmesser and its predecessors such as the M/60 Fusillier-Seitengwehr. These Prussian sidearms typically have solid brass hilts but Baden sidearms typically have slab sided grips made of leather, wood, or plastic (hard rubber). This hilt has extra cost stag horn grips affixed with two brass rivets. The black leather scabbard is typical for these sidearms with a seam down the center of the back and scalloped brass fittings with a large flat frog stud in the Imperial construction style.

Rolf Selzer, on his website www.seitengewehr.de, discusses this style of sidearm in "Die Haubajonett der Koniglich Preussischen und Grossherzoglich Badischen Grenzaufseher zu Fuss". He shows similar Seitengewehre for the Baden Border Guards/Customs officials including the very similar Baden Police sidearm that has an even more exaggerated curved pommel that he indicates might have been utilized by Baden Grenzers in the brass version.

Has anyone seen this particular style of Seitengewehr before or have any thoughts on exactly what it is?

Very interesting sidearm George. It does look quite similar to the unusual Baden Polizei bayonet which has always been of interest to me. I have a WKC example with 17” blade but was quite tweaked after seeing your gilt example.

Just thinking that if this piece were a government issued piece that they might have opted for something cheaper than stag but that’s just supposition. Of course it could be private purchase too. I’m certainly curious if anyone is able to find a catalogue reference to this item.

Thanks Billy. I would love to find a catalog reference too. I think it is a private purchase piece as well. It was just too odd to pass up.

Here is an example of the gold colored Baden Polizei sidearm that you are talking about and is shown in the catalogs. Selzer believes this Seitengewehr was used by the Polizei and Baden Border Guards and the similarity is just too striking IMHO.
