Hi, I only seem to see portepees on chained SS daggers, am I correct in thinking portepees could be worn on any dagger by waffen SS officers? and these portepees were standard 42cm army ones? anyone with photos of non chained daggers with a portepee would be very welcome, thank you

As far as I know, portepees on SS daggers were only allowed for SS-SD officers and that the date authorizing this was after the M1936 was being worn. That means portepees should be found on chained daggers. The exact way of tying them on daggers is debated among collectors. They were standard Heer portepees. If anyone has better info or dates, please post

My opinion is that far more M1936 daggers have portepees now than during the Third Reich. whistle grin

If you want to see M1933 daggers with them, visit eBay, Gunbroker, 321 Militaria, etc sick

I agree completely. I occasionally have seen a knot on an M33 that looked like it was added pre-1945 but they are the exception. Most look added more recently than that.

A 1943 order from Himmler authorized the wearing of the army portepee with specifically the SS Service Dagger 36. The illustration accompanying that order showed the official way to attach the knot.

Thanks, Deke,

Did the order apply to all officers / senior enlisted men entitled to wear the M1936, or only those in SS-SD ?

Both versions of the order authorize the 36 dagger to only be worn by Waffen-SS officers and officers of the Sicherheitspolizei and SD.
