During the war and after the invasion of Norway, the government in exile authorized and issue medals for participation and bravery.
The highest ranking award was the War Cross with Sword, instituted in 1941 and awarded to 273 people up to 1949.

The King Haakon VII Liberty Cross was instituted in 1945 and awarded to those military and civilian personnel supporting the war effort. 60 Norwegians, 198 British and 211 Swedish personnel, mostly civilians, were awarded this cross.

The St Olav Medal was awarded starting in 1942 for bravery. 736 Norwegians were awarded this medal. In 1988, 43 merchant marine sailors were awarded the medal as well.

The War Medal was instituted in 1941 and awarded to Norwegian military and merchant marine personnel.

On May 18, 1945, the Liberty Medal was authorized and awarded to military and civilian personnel who honourably served Norway during the war. 204 Norwegians and 597 British citizens were awarded this medal.

The Particpation medal was created in 1945 and warded to about 30,000 Norwegians. A rosette was attached for service in the invasion of Norway.

In October 1942, King Haakon's 70th birthday was celebrated by this medal.
The rarity of these medals is in the sequence presented, starting with the rarest.

While technically not issued by the government in exile, this medal was instituted for Norwegians fighting as volunteers in Finland against the Russians and before the German invasion of Norway.
