I know this might not be a good idea and wotan will hate me for this lol. I'm always curious if there could be something stamped on the tang. I have never takin my DJ apart but I want to. Is there a tool that you use to turn the pommel nut with the hole through the nut. Mine is really stuck,

Yes, there are slotted tip tools for that type of nut.
They are really easy to convert a regular flat tip screwdriver onto one, by cutting a slot in the center of the proper size driver.

Hello Mikee! DonĀ“t mess with your daggers!!! wink

When the head screw is "frozen" it is dangerous to open it by force because the tang might break or the thread might be worn down. Within seconds a nice hunting dagger can become a wrack. Even more it is possible that the grip itself is "frozen" on the tang and opening of the headscrew does not reveal the tang. There are several other dangers and afterwards the put together can develop a p-i-t-a...
And the untouched edged weapon will never be the same.

All I can say is that disassambling of an edged weapon should be carefully reflected and weighed.

Why do you want to know if there are any tang markings? Perhaps Baz69 can help you, I am sure he has already done some disassambling.

Regards,

wotan, gd.c-b#105

I agree, good choice.
I have never used this on a German dagger.
But my hobby is salvaging US WWII fighting knives that are pretty bad to begin with, and many have a split pommel nut.

I'm sure someone can post a picture, I am not a premium member, so can not.
Not sure really what kind of nut is on a DJ, but if it is like the nuts on a Pack bayonet grip, it is really just a straight blade screwdriver with a slot cut in the middle of the blade.
If you search split nut driver, a photo will come up.
Hope this helps
Ed
