I have two police.

Now this was yrs ago but Wayne wrote the book on these engraved bayonets!

Always had some fine stuff!

He has a web site and goes to shows!

He stops by GD for a peek or request sometimes!

Might have some more pics if I can find them!

I tried taking pics at shows for collectors that could not make it!

Nobody seems to do that much anymore!

I wonder whats the hard ones to find! Makers? Condition?

I only have had a few sine I do not know them

Anybody want to tell collectors about etched bayonets!

After selling much of my collection to a good friend, I found I couldn't quite part with some of the sawbacks. Some interesting pieces are left in the collection, a Henckels Zwillingswerk, a Carl Meis, a Horstator and a single oval Eickhorn.

Very nice indeed!

The sawbacks are so nice!

Have had some but now I know why I didn't find more!

They were at your house!

Now you must tell us if some makers show up more than others!

I like Henckels stuff!

Were many of yours found with the knots?

You were lucky to find so many knots still on!

Whats the one in middle with emblem?

Thanks

Thanks Paul,

I started with just one minty long Eickhorn with a toned knot and it eventually morphed into about 130-135 examples of every maker mark, distributor, variants, unit marks, etc. Amazing how much room that batch of stuff took up!

As far as makers, you'll often find Eickhorn which is no surprise. Tiger is common too, WKC, Horster too. But you can every so often find a really rare maker mark which will still sell for what a typical example would sell for. I think it was a short Wusthof I scored off Eban that started me on my ridiculous quest to find all those marks. I remember sending in loads and loads of pics and descriptions to Fisher's for their maker mark books.

Here's some more info on the short sawback. These bayonets are usually referred to as Feuerschutzpolizei bayonets so in my mind, they straddle the fence between Feuerwehr and Polizei blades. Typically they're scarce to find but all seem to follow a pattern of unplated KS98 hilt, plain or sawback blade which are usually 20cm, black steel painted KS98 scabbard, copper Polizei sword style grip emblem pinned to the obverse grip plate and either WKC marked or unmarked.

Ron Weinand and Gary Walker show an unmarked example with plain long blade on page 131 of "Clamshells & other German Bayonets". George Wheeler also shows an example on page 121 of "Seitengewehr" that's WKC marked on a short blade that's also a sawback. I believe Tom Johnson shows this style bayonet several times in his original series of "Collecting the Edged Weapons of the 3R".

Here's a shot of the reverse of the frog which came on it. The frog is a late production item of rubberized canvas. Probably impossible to remove without breaking it, I believe it to be original to the piece too.

The knot I have attached to it is not original to the piece and is a Feuerwehr variant with a lighter pink than normally seen along with a different stem. Some of these knots come with cloth straps too, I love the variants of this stuff.

I just knew it was a police!

Look at the detail of the eagle!

Now WKC made that blade! Do you think they made emblem also?

Or would they outsource it to other firms?

They are quite impressive to look at!

I bet you can spot things others would miss in details of these pieces!

I could look at stuff all day and pick up something I didn't know!

It could and has taken a life time of observing collectors items and my own!

What a fun hobby!

P,

I doubt WKC made the emblem, probably outsourced that piece to Overhof or one of the other smalls manufacturers.

It is definitely impressive for a late produced piece but maybe it looks better because there's no spotty plating? The unplated finish is consistent and it's pretty well made, especially the blade. Those sawteeth would really give you a nasty gash if you handle it clumsily too.

I’ve got 24 or so Polizei bayonets with a variety of emblems, this one is the only Feuerwehr related example. I’ve seen fire bayonet with grip emblems for years but never found one I felt was period, before this one.

Reverse with presentation. It’s amazing how much work went into this item, especially in 1930-1931, during the height of the Depression and the resultant inflation in Germany at the time.
