Looking again at these horrific photos, I notice that three pic seem to show SS soldiers and one officer armed with Soviet drum fed sub machine guns

Dave Those look like PPD's, or PPSH-41's. Both would be 7.62x25 cal. Ed

Interesting that the SS would arm themselves with Soviet sub machine guns, not just one officer with a captured weapon but regular soldiers. That would imply that they would stock ammunition and have armorers trained to maintain them.

The PPD and PPSH were very close to the MP40 in design and operation. The Germans converted a lot of the Russian PP's to shoot the 9x19. They already new the weapon inside and out. Both the MP and PP's are still used today. Most of us WWll guys would love to have a MP 40.
