Hi, I've seen some people make their decision in not to buy a ring because of bad ( amateur ) engravings. The majority of people in Europe during and after the war were pretty poor. Feel free to post any of your rings with "bad" engravings  Here's a Swedish wedding ring: Date on the hallmarks are 1943 Date on the engraving reads 1945?

I agree totally.. and many done by the owners themselves!
That ring is fine. The hallmark code is put on when it was made.. Is that a band of laurel leafs??

Yes, it's laurel leaf, common pattern for that time period.

when you get a chance and would like to,,I'd love to see a clear shot of the outer band.. I know it has the period Swiss hallmarks... I believe I have a period advertisement for it somewhere,,I'll look over the weekend..

Hi, you mean Swedish? Swiss is Switzerland?
I don't know if these will do, I can take better ones tomorrow in daylight.
( I cleaned it a little bit with toothpaste ( it's super effective for cleaning silver ) )

yes your correct Swedish! , 3 Crown mark...
Here's the ring from a 1935 German advertisement..,,came in gold and silver.. Many countries made/sold them.. Very popular... There are more,,some with oak leafs/acorns, oak leafs and Swastikas and of course plain..

Wow, nice advertisement! Yes common pattern all across Europe. I've seen a couple of different patterns before, might pick one up in the future. I saw this one I have on the Swedish "ebay" for cheap, so I picked it up.

Gaspare, that is a nice ad ! Mahler, I also don't hestitate to buy a ring with a bad inscription. Your ring is ok . Here is mine. I don't know what is the upside of the inscription ( rune?) So I have on one pic with turned ring.

Hi Benten,
that's a nice ring, I have no idea what the inscription says. To me it looks like someone tried to carve something first then carved something over it ( you know when you write with ink and try to change a misspelling and tries to fix it by writing over it in bold ). The triangle could be a rune, that I have no clue about!
Where did you get it? What country?

Mahler, I bought this Artdeco ring in Germany. I think it is from the end 20ties, early 30ties.

@Benten Oh nice! Yeah it's definetly from the 20s or 30s as far as the design goes. What is it equipped with? stone? almost looks like tigers eye to me.

Yes Gaspare , black enamel and 2 SS runes on it , that would make my day. The laurel wreath is the symbol of victory. The shape of the wreath around the shape of the ring is a strong design. Very nice.

When you see scratched letters or numbers, keep in mind that it could be instructions for a jeweler or engraver. Let me explain: the owner scratches a name/number on metal before sending it to the jeweler so the correct thing is engraved or so that it is not mixed up with another item. In this case the ring was never taken to the jeweler for some reason: - guy changed his mind  - spent all their money  - got shot in WWII Dave PS - I have an SS dagger like that. The owner scratched his number on the cross guard

Just a chime in here. It was war, a lot of people were in prison camps. The ones that were lucky enough to get to keep there wedding rings, or really lucky enough to hide them, could have done the poor engraving.
I always thought that scratched engraving on a dagger was done by the GI or family latter. or a attempt to increase value, a poor attempt at that.
Again it was war time, the German solders, Officers surely, could just stop by the seller or a jeweler or engraver and have it done quickly. I mean it was the 3rd Reich, if you refused, the other option was the wall outside, or a train ride. Just my thoughts.
