It is fairly old. Very stiff, thick leather with a crescent of iron built into the bottom.

Hand cut brass pieces riveted on.

Cord is 15.5 inches long

This is the back. Very crude manufacture. The right vertical strip of brass is gone

Very close, Jared !

It is Tibetan. The best clue of its purpose is the iron bit at the bottom.

Eric is right ... "Chuckmuck" is the name for it.

I've had it for about 60 years. With the iron crescent and a pouch for a flint, I always thought it to be some kind of fire starting device. Crudely made, with a strap you could fasten to a button as you rode your horse ( or camel as Militarynut opines ) it looked old. A couple of weeks ago I started looking around the I-net, and, after searching for a flint purse, this came up.

So there you are. In 2020 I own a chucmuck.

Thanks to all who had a go at this one

Dave,

Interesting piece and very important to have way back - no fire no dinner etc.

Thanks for posting
