Hello, I have never owned a SS dagger and this one came up for sale recently in my area. Overall it looks like it may be good. One of the things that concerns me is it looks like all the scabbard retaining screws are missing. And I haven't seen it in person to check the blade. Opinions appreciated.

Looks genuine but pretty 'doggy'. Would it even be worth buying and for how much?

I'd pass.
You are unlikely to find genuine screws and the chain and fittings are rusted and the grip has bits missing. Save your money

I'd take it if the price was right, I'm sure many others would as well.

But after you've pounced on it, then what ?
It will always but a lower grade junker with rusted fittings and chain.

Well, that would be 1 more chain than I have now, rusted or not. I'm not up to date on pricing trends but it would have to be closer to $2k to tempt me.

This guy is doing his own personal auction. When he first contacted me he said he had a few offers, $1000. and $1500. and he realized it was worth more then that. The next day he claims to have a $2000. offer. I thought I'd meet him and look at it in hand. But then I realized I'd probably be wasting me time with the seller, and I would not pay much over 2K. Thanks all for your thoughts.

Well yeah, you don't want to get caught up in an unknown bidding frenzy against guys who may or may not even exist. But I have no prob believing he has an offer of $2k, I would be tempted to meet up, cut through the chase and offer $2.2K, if he says I can get more than that say, nice meeting you, good luck and adios. Just make sure to take the proper precautions for a meeting like that, preferably nice public place, someone with you and a pistol, if able. Guys get robbed and killed over this stuff, the owner should be on his guard as well.

Best place to meet is your bank. Most banks, even small branches have a conference room. If you talk to them nicely, you can usually borrow it for a few minutes.

Bank, not a bad idea. I have done craigslist deals where people insist on meeting in front of a police station, which is generally fine by me. Most of my meets the people either come to my place, I go to theirs or a home depots parking lot is usually good enough for me. The few high risk deals I do [say $300 and over and/or in a sketchy area]] I take a friend and a gun, so far so good but everyone needs to be as cautious as possible and never talk yourself into anything outside of your comfort zone. I did one time and though nothing happened I swore I'd never do that again.

ANY Craig's List situation is 'iffy'.
I've also had situations where I'm told they were offed more before and I tell them to go ahead and take the earlier offer. Here's my top offer - NOW - and in cash, that usually flushes out the situation where you're bidding against your self.
If they don't take your offer WALK and wish them a nice day.

I've has many craigslist transactions buying and selling, vast majority of folks are average Joes just like you and me. I like to talk to people on the phone rather than just texting, you can usually get some accurate vibes in a convo, and a couple times I backed out of a transaction because I got bad vibes. As always, the old caveat "if it seems too good to be true then it probably is" applies, can't let the possibility of a great sale or buy override common sense.

although very salty with a few issues as pointed out just remember ..this dagger was there during that period and the history that follows it. As advised seek a compromise in price.

Just my opinion, and HOPE! I know all the big guys say only buy TOP quality items, they will always be investment quality. Thats great, if you don't have a problem getting the cash together. I'm 71, always worked for myself and did not pay a lot into SS, hence a very low monthly check. I'm doing great, a home on the lake and a home in the mountains, and owe nothing, with 3 safes full of stuff. Hard for me to put thousands into a item, when everybody is saying the run of the mill stuff is worthless. This hobby seems to be headed that direction. Look at Wittys banter, a prototype Eich Army bought by a dealer for 300 or 400. Will go on the market for thousands. Kind of scares away potential buyers, I think. Some people have to buy within there means if they want the item, just life. You guys are right. This stuff went through a war. And 70 years of use since. You can buy a bin there item, or a factory non issue that only saw shelf life. Your choice. Marry Christmass and Happy New Year to all, be safe. Ed

well Dave by your philosophy and way of thinking no one should collect any cloth with moth or damage no helmet with dings or rust etc........it is a good representational piece for less than $7500 or $8000 that mint specimens are commanding. It is still collectible IMO. Certainly decent for those on a budget as we all were at one point in time. Bottom line buy if you like it and can afford it....until you can upgrade it certainly nothing wrong in that if you had told me back in 1982 and 1995 that in 2016 I would have a mint type II chained SS from Paul Hogle, 3 near mint full Rohms, 2 goverment officials, a mint HJ leader, a Himmler SS, a double engraved Voos heer, a bagged and tagged un issued RAD leaders, tagged RAD hewer, school marked NPEA all acquired in one year I would have laughed. I bought what came my way and what I could afford back then and waited 27years for that mint chained SS.......cheers and best of the season Ryan

Hhmm, , things like a minty postcard, a EKII mint in issue bag,,run of the mill kind of,,but still collectible and will increase in value somewhat. A prototype dagger, or these engraved daggers etc. with no supporting documentation or provenance other than the guru swearing its right!? Pity our poor wives/family that has to try and move the stuff.,,,,once the 2 dagger gurus are gone good luck with stuff like that. Your lifetime CoA is expiring soon! I kid guys.. Man, if you got the disposable income to buy the stuff you want you've earned it, so go for it!
