Paul- it?s Latin for To each his own. It was the motto of the order of the black eagle - of which this appears to be a badge of the order. Whether it?s real or not the medal guys will know, but I would guess it may be police related or predate ww2. I know the ss translated the motto to German- it was Jedem das Seine and was on the buchenwald gate. Other than that o don?t know anything else about it.

is This associated with a particular unit?

None that I am aware of- does it have any other marking?

It was used by Order of black eagle, sometimes too in prussian Guard units, and later as Feldjaeger.

The star grip emblem is indicative of the Gardes Du Corps. They were the bodyguard unit of the King of Prussia & the Kaiser. As Mike mentioned, their motto was Suum Cuique.

I've seen these before & I believe they must be approached like any other seitengewehr with a grip emblem. How is it attached is the first question. As to when it was attached, we may likely never know.

For what it's worth, the rivets look period & unmessed with, that always helps
