Hi,

I've just been given a small photo booklet from the Grand daughter of a German verteran. This is not my area & wondered whether anyone is able to translate the inscription which I believe is in Suetterlin.

Thank you
Don

Hi Andy & Dave,

I am well thank you. Yes it is frustrating, as the veteran who originally owned the booklet was the father of a lady who carried out my tranlastions. Unfortunately she now has dementia & is in a care home. Her daughter found the booklet & gave it to me as she knew that I collected TR items & would give it a good home.

She asked me if I could find out what was written in it as it may give her some information on her grandfather....

Dave,
Thank you, I already had this key but I have had little luck deciphering the booklet using it.

Thanks again
Don

I can try but hopefully it only stimulates the reluctant native speaker to instinctively correct me. Germans do not care for misspelling or mispronunciations much I have found... maybe it says in memory of my service, replacing/replacement in north Finland for company (???) of the 5th infantry regiment 392nd (?) of the 169th infantry Division. In the field, in December 1941. Best guesses for me.

Hello gents, this is quite an easy one as it is written in a very exact manner:

Zur Erinnerung an meinen --- In remembrance of my
Einsatz in Nordfinnland --- mission at northern finnland
als Komp.(agnie)-Chef der 5./I.R. 392 --- as company chief of 5./ Infantry Regiment 392
in der 169 I.D. --- in the 169 Infantry Division.
Im Felde, im Dezember 1941 --- In the battlefield, in december 1941
Konrad Schluter (or Schlueter), Oblt. (Second Lieutenant).

That is fantastic, thank you Gentlemen, especially to Wotan. I shall pass the information on to the veteran's granddaughter.

Thanks again
Don

You are always welcome! Glad I could help. Sometimes, when the handwriting is very individual, I have myself a hard time or it is even impossible to read.

BTW, what we have here is a common mixture of Kurrent (Suetterlin) and "Schreibschrift".

Regards,

That is very interesting. Obviously I know of Suetterlin, but I have never heard of Schreibschrift.....

Thanks again
