Ivan,

An early Bahnschutz dagger by the looks of it. The question really is whether the Pl?macher blade is original to the dagger and that's something I can't answer.

I have seen other early Bahnschutz daggers by makers other than Eick and H?rster, PD L?neschloss from memory, so an unusual maker doesn't necessarily kill it in my eyes. But Pl?macher blades have often been concerns, especially on etched examples. Very curious what some of the other members think about this one.

One other observation, the maker mark appears etched. I have owned a couple of Pl?macher Army daggers and those marks were stamped so I'm not sure if the mark is only supposed to be stamped or not.

Hello stingray, can you please tell us what the material of the grip fittings is? In the photographs it looks like it would be brass, silvered? Is the scabbard from steel?

I have looked at the photographs from your first posting. It is one of those dagger you would need to hold in hands to make an easier judgement. But perhaps the material of the grip fittings solves the riddle.

In my opinion and due to my experience, the PLUEMACHER mark on those army kind blades was always etched (never have seen such kind of blade with a stamped P. mm) and for me the mm looks totally correct. Unfortunately I could not find it in ma files but I think to remember that I alreada have seen a 2nd RRPP dagger with the PLUEMACHER mark.

Regards,

I have to correct one of the things I said earlier since the comment was from memory. My Pl?macher marks were etched and not stamped. The details were fine and in memory I believed them to be stamped but they are etched, similar to this mark. And I agree with you Wotan, the mark looks period.

I do like this dagger but that said, I believe it to be a difficult thing to own or sell. It could me as right as rain and there will always be someone saying it's not "textbook" or not period because they'd never seen one previously. The thing itself has a nice fit to it and seems that t has been together for a very long time. Can't say if that means anything except that it likely isn't a recent item. Would love to hear others' thoughts on this interesting piece.
