Can Automobile club daggers have Naval motifs on the blade, my only reference is the Imperial Volume by TW and TJ where it's mentioned that there are two types, one with floral motifs and one with a more military decoration, no mention of naval motifs. This one has an anchor on one side and a sailing ship on the other, it doesn't make sense to me but its worth a question on these rare daggers.

Ivan

Thanks for the comparisons, for me the blade seems short compered to the scabbard and I cannot understand the naval motifs on the blade. I do not know enough of these to say whether its good or bad, hopefully more experienced collectors might be able to add to the dilema. Perhaps a Naval blade has been substituted?.

Gary,

Not all Auto Corps daggers have etched blades but I have to admit, I didn't remember offhand if I'd ever seen a Naval motif on one. Years back, I had many discussions with Vic Diehl about these daggers and didn't think we had ever discussed a Naval motif on the blades.

That said, I went back to my files and did find an unmarked one, (sold on Eban in September, 2013) that had the same etch as the one you show. Actually, the dagger is a dead ringer for yours except that there doesn't appear to be any wear or corrosion on the fittings. I didn't have time to find if there's others but there may be.

Hi Billy

Vic mentions that the grip has a double strand of wire in TW&TJ's Imperial volume, it just seems strange to me that these two do not have that trait either, maybe these two were a little naval subsection of the Automobile Club, I just do not know, they maybe completely made up from parts, its not a call I feel I can make.

Thanks for looking through your files, there are at least two of them that much we do know.

Cheers

I do have a plain bladed example with a similar one wire ivory grip. I always assumed it was a pars project in process.

Thanks Jim

I have a feeling that they are a mixture of parts, Naval and automobile.

I had one of these naval bladed AC daggers once. I returned it to the seller. It is not even a Frankenstein, it is a completely fabricated fake. When one compares it to an original the craftsmanship while good, is simply not there. AC daggers all originally had a thin silver plating over a brass base. If one looks closely even the most worn original dagger has traces of the original silver plate remaining in the recesses of the detail. The fake dagger I had displayed none. In fact it had that funky dark splotchy faked patina as this one shows. The cross guard is not formed properly. AC daggers NEVER had navy blades. This organization was under the auspices of the the German Reich not a military branch. Typical heraldic eagles, implements of war such as lances and drums as well as a "floral" motif are typical etches. More frequently you encounter them with plain blades.
