I present you my last acquisition: a dagger SA that belonged to the SA-Brigadef?hrer Emil W?ckerle (1897 - 1955). An almost identical dagger is in the book "German Daggers" by Thomas M Johnson. According to the information obtained, it appears that the manufacturer has manufactured at least two daggers (perhaps 3?). If you have an opinion on this, please write a post. Cordially.

Interesting dagger. Was this a presentation etched dagger commissioned by the General for presentation as opposed to his dagger? Very nice from the pictures posted congratulations, would love to see closer pictures of the etching/dedication. cheers and best, Ryan

Typically it's not good news to find another personalised inscription, is the name and dedication the same as this one? Technically these type of inscriptions were not produced by the manufacturer, this is not a "template" type etch. A thin layer of wax was applied and the inscription would be scratched into the wax with a stylus, so it is normal to see uneven text and hand-written type. Sometimes the lettering would be applied by a craftsman, other times it could have been done by the wearer himself, especially on a signature. Once the wax had been completed, the manufacturer would etch as normal in an acid bath.

If there are more than one of these with the same/similar inscription, I'd be concerned.

Hello Redbaron, I have to base my opinion on the opinions of people who know better than me the subject. I dismounted the dagger and it seems that it is not a reproduction. The author of the book "German Daggers" assured me that he knew no copy to date ... According to other sources, it is not unlikely that the manufacturer has made several models. I contacted the family of Mr. Emil Wackerle but I could not have any details.
So, it is true that for the moment, impossible to say if the dagger is 100% authentic.

Hi Nibelungen,

It's same thing with another known piece, the dagger of Gruppenf?hrer Knickmann at inauguration of the Krefeldt bridge by R. hess in June 1936. The Knickman's dagger which resides in an american collection according T. Johnson, was made by C.Eickhorn..and a friend of mine is the owner of a splendid another specimen with exactly same design and dedication but made by F. Herder A.S....all is exactly similar except the maker?! His daggers bears on the ricasso "Zweiantfertigung f?r Gruppenf. Knickmann." So why 2 daggers for the same man made by TWO different makers!

Hello Pat, int?ressant votre t?moignage. A point of clarification here:

Most presented or dedicated daggers began with a new dagger, but not all.

In a few cases, a man's already issued dagger was sent off to have a dedication added to it.

Hi there
How much would that dagger you show off be worth these days?
Thanks
