This is my first attempt at repairing a celluloid saber grip. Information was provided by Mr. Fab, one of our strongest and certainly most knowledgeable saber collectors.

Here is a before and after photo of this Holler I picked up awhile back. I think this worked out pretty well, considering this was my first attempt...

I had also replaced the grip wire about a year ago or so.

PS- Thanks George

After. A few tell-tale signs of repair, but she sure looks a whole lot better.

Swordfish,

Is the information on repair provided by Fab out there where others can access. Your repair does look nice. I have a cracked grip that I would like to get back together. Don't believe there is considerable material missing but this information would be most helpful.

Hope to hear back from you.

I know some people use glues, epoxy, j.b. weld etc... And than use paint , markers etc.. to blacken the grip...
Through repairing and building instruments accordions, concertinas,in my fathers business I worked with a lot of celluloid (these instruments are covered in it.) I use celluloid to make grip repairs . It is very tricky and takes time ,but the repair cannot be detected in any way..Be careful, the brass pins bugger easy.

What is the easiest method for someone who has never done a grip repair to use? I have a cracked grip similar to the OP and would like to keep it from getting worse.

Edit - Sorry for digging up a zombie thread!

Carp,

No need to be sorry - maintenance and repairs are always good subjects.

Form the sound of it, there is no easy way. Maybe Damast will give you some tips.

Two part epoxy to fill the hole then sand, file, shape before smoothing it down. After it is smooth and no seems tape off the area and spray with lacquer as this gives the same depth in the color when completed. Wait a few weeks for the paint to harden and then you can polish the rest of the handle to match the fixed area. Take your time and the more prep work you do the better the outcome will be.

Just take your time and make sure all of the prep work is completed before you spray the paint. If you dont want to tackle this project I would be more than happy to assist to save another sword.

I don't really have the time to do it. I work a lot. On top of that, it is a gift for my daughter so I am leery that I might screw it up and ruin it.
