Mike,,thanks for posting that.. It is a VERY interesting ring.. WPMC? is that what we're thinking? and 0 1 on the cheeks?

Again, very interesting how the 'gems' are mounted.. Thats a very popular pattern. There's advert of it from the late teens or 1920 if I remember correctly.. And this ring is nice quality and no big faults to see, lines, dots, burns etc. Actually I don't see anything that makes me lean towards it being cast!

When you run the hallmark there is a very similar.. A company in N.J. making some very nice jewelry easily dating back to wartime,,,but this has that '0 1 '...
- Maybe a old ring with new carving/engraving [?]. I'm going to do more checking... Please,,any member have a comment on this??

Collector,,I too, and I think Mike,,that this is an old ring with maybe new engraving on it....

Can you elaborate on the 01 is MC related ...... IF the top is WPMC the MC could stand for Motorcycle Club... is that last letter a C? anybody?

Lets get to that hallmark. I see it as FELGER.. Doing some research there is a F&F Felger jewelry co. They made nice good quality pieces as early as the 20s in to the 50s,,maybe longer... BUT,,their hallmark appears as FFF .. They are from New Jersey. Attached is a ad from 1922.

Could that be though a FCLGER?,,

Anyone passing by what do you think,,on forehead the last letter is a C?? and in the hallmark name is 2nd letter a E or a C ??

hi members
i would like to give you my thoughts on this unusual skull ring i have looked it over carefully and in my personal opinion i feel that this ring is a fantisy ring made for like gaspare said here possibly a bikers ring as far as being of the period made ring not my thoughts the biggest flag for me was the diamonds set in a tube if war time made there would have been prong set stones tom wittmann called it right fantisy ring and truthfully for the price 295.00 not bad at all hey who knows they might be diamonds we only get what we pay for hope all agree god bless andy militarynut

M.nut,, yes its a weird thing but interesting.. I've never seen settings like that! Tube setting.. Going to look in to that.. Thanks for the post..
Don't really know what the hallmark is,,or even what the engraving is.
.
Yes Wittman lists it as a 'fantasy',,,don't think we'll find anything definitive on it,,too bad.. I guess we have a real mystery piece..

hi gaspare
yes tube settings for setting these diamonds sort of dates this ring any where from around the 1960s to today any diamond over one carrot or bigger should be in a tube setting the only minus with tube setting is that you loose the sight of the top of the diamond especially if its over a carrot still its a fantisy ring god bless andy militarynut

Not sure what it means but have seen 0.1 and 1% on biker items , joker type skull also for me points in direction of a Club ring

"Some outlaw motorcycle clubs can be distinguished by a 1% patch worn on the colors. This is claimed to be a reference to a comment made by the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) in which they stated that 99% of motorcyclists were law-abiding citizens, implying that the last one percent were outlaws." wink

My thought was originally biker but not outlaw: it looks like an affiliate club of he IronPigs (that?s a police/former police MC) called the ?wild pigs? (hence WPMC).... I understand the 1% idea but it really looks like a commemorative piece/date- maybe a memorial ride (?) from 2001 as it looks to say ?01 more than 1%, or .1 or anything like that.... I can?t say for sure but I doubt the WPMC as I understand it is an outlaw club, unless it?s a different club with the same letters? Anyone know of an outlaw MC with WP as the name?

Hey guys, just wanted to settle the mystery of this ring, as I know what it is. Once you add up the clues it all makes sense. First off, it's an old ring, as Gaspare pointed out. 1920s and even earlier. Second, if you look at the third picture, you can see the last letter is not a "c" but an "s". This odd type of font dates to the turn of the century, where you will see it in some advertising. So now that we have the inscription W.P.M.S., let's think about who would wear a skull ring. Traditionally, doctors have used the skull and crossbones, and it is a prevelant theme for that profession in this time period. And lastly, we have the '01 inscription. Putting everything together gives us this: this is a doctor's ring, likely given as a gift on his graduation from medical school ( maybe William Penn Medical School) in 1901. It is US made by the Felger jewelry company. US makers borrowed liberally from existing European patterns. I saw and almost purchased a similar ring with emerald eyes and inscribed on the skull with a Greek sorority. Very cool ring, Mike, and would make a great wearer!

I have been a physician for over 50 yrs and have never seen a MD wearing anything close to this- rings upon graduation from Med school were not very common because of the need for frequent washings (bother to remove and risk of loss)- those that were worn were much more SEDATE than this. Mike.,,, in the teens, 20s, even early 30s there were rings called Doctors rings'. They were always some sort of skull.. Now I admit I've never seen one as garish as the one first shown on this topic... But they were certainly out there..

this one attached is from a mid 1920s advert..... Nice looking ring actually.. Engrave a SA,,or SS on the cartouche and your in business wink

Maybe if that really is an S at the end it could be a military school, I don?t know about West Point mostly because the ring there is a well known big deal and of course it?s known as USMA in initials. But maybe another one?

Modern doctors don't wear such things of course...they have fallen out of favor. But 75-100 years ago the skull and bones was a frequently used symbol of the medical profession. I have a picture of a skull and bones doctors watch fob that advertises surgical instruments, if I can find it. It's definitely not a military piece though.
