So it isn't necessarily a "Pilots" cap. A member of a flight crew would wear yellow also ?
What color did ground crew wear ? I remember the guards in the "Great Escape" wore both yellow and red piping.

The chin strap is not the proper one for a Luft NCO visor. The one on this cap is the type found on political/cival type visors.

Some info:

The stamp mentions Fl.H.K. Wunstorf which is the Fliegerhorstkommadantur or Air Field Station Command at Wunstorf. http://www.relikte.com/wunstorf/index.htm

So the cap belonged to a member of the ground staff of the air field....he could well have become a pilot later in the war but at the time of issue not.

Comments will be highly appreciated! Smile

Hi this is a very strange post thus far.. Confused.in reference to the viusor pictured...although the chinstrap is not the type typically found on the vast majority of Luftwaffe NCO visors it is a type that was used by some makers and is encountered rarely on some visors...I see no red flags that would indicate that this is not a period piece...appears to be by a rather obscure manufacturer as well...nice cap...also all aircrew wore this piped visor...not just pilots .cheers, Ryan

Private purchase, or small 'official' contract for the base personnel, utilizing a local maker perhaps?

Hat is good--appears to be a cottage maker. Heer straps on LW and LW on Heer are common.
Note the rarely seen method of affixing the lining directly to the pasteboard. I like it.

In regards to Crowback's question, Luftwaffe ground personnel often did double, triple and quadruple duties, other than their assigned 'official' duties. You might see black piped engineering troops guarding bases, mixed in with the red waffenfarbe of the Flak artillery branch.

Later on in the war, as the Luftwaffe air arm diminished, surplus to needs ground and flight crews were pressed into the infantry role, and of course many were free'd up to administer and guard the POW camps...

If I'm not mistaken pilots could be noncoms (especially in the Stuka?) and not just commissioned officers. Similar in RAF.

Interesting cap and informative discussion and photos!

Not being a common maker just makes it even more interesting.

I also have a Luftwaffe great-coat on it's way in, to go with the cap.

Trond, in my experiences, some of the best stuff I have encountered and purchased came from Norway. You guys have the good stuff!

Finally the cap arrived. Big Grin

Looks like someone has colored the roundel black, for unknown reason and time. You can see the red color on the edge and also thru the black.

agree- nice one.

you also see army c'straps on waffen-SS caps - and I once owned a w-ss em cap with SS strap but HEER insignia - and no sign it ever had anything but the heer badges!

this cap is well within known variations.

IMO these NCO caps are far better looking than officer caps.
