a bit of a weird topic but.. For photos of soldiers that looks like real winners as far as rings in wear but,,,but a near miss.
Sometimes a lot of money gets spent on these photos the sellers say "you can see the ring fine"

An example,,,a nice photo bought. Clear, in focus, should be fine close up of the ring when scanned!

Here is another I was going to get. Lucky the seller was honest and said 'you just can't make it out',,looked like it had potential,,but a near miss.

It is amazing when you really look how many photos the men are wearing a ring or 2. IF you have any near miss photos please, post away.....

Gaspare, I do own about 1500 "wearing edged weapons of the IIIR" photographs. There are a lot "wearing ring" photographs between them. often unidentifyable. You already got a few "wearing ring" photograph scans from me with identifyable rings, eg a clear Westwall ring.
In the meanwhile I got some additional photographs, eg. a nice identifyable Luft ring. The photographs are not cheap. I have bought them from the net, from ebay and from private collections which mainly were disolved.

So it is always a pity for me seeing one of my pics for which I have payed good money anywhere shown in the net.... (btw, the second pic above I have bought frown...... and I would not say that the rings are not identifyable for a specialist) therefore I have totally chancelled to show any or even parts of my best paid pics.

Personally I would think that a lot of -in photographs- shown rings are identifyable. But mostly of them are simple, smooth wedding rings, often "seal" rings with a stone, nothing special for identification for ring collectors. But on rare occasions the ring might be interesting and real clear to be identified like the already mentioned luft ring in one of my pics.

Best regards,

wotan, gd.c-b#105

Oh man I'm sorry! , I took it off the auction site not too long ago.. Well now I guess I can add: Photo credit 'Wotan'.

Yes you have many good photos! Seems daggers come out really nice and clear in most photos. I also collect Wolchowstock and they usually come out pretty clear also!

Watches, rings, not so good. Worst is probably cufflinks, don't think I've seen one photo where they are identifiable.

Gaspare, doesnīt matter, you couldnīt know.
My photographic skills are bad so is the detail but I am nearly sure that a ring collector could identify the rings. The left ring seems to be a metal ring with plain (or perhaps a monogram which cannot be seen because of the light) surface, the right ring Looks like a relatively simple, patially drilled ring.

And a ring with an obviously transparent stone.

Two photographs with death head honor rings. One even in the pic to recognize, the second one due to my bad pic not but with a loupe you can clearly see it (together with a wedding ring - btw the honor ring is the left one of the two rings).
And be sure these rings are no fakes but originals grin grin grin .

After checking a lot of my photographs I have to say that you ARE RIGHT, a lot of rings is NOT identifyable. Also I cannot understand this. The pebbling of a button cann be seen clearly but a ring beneath this button canNOT be identified because blurry... But it is this way.
Another fact that you donīt see rings in a lot of pics is that due to regulations the men often wore gloves when taking official photographs.
Finally, if there are enough pics several rings can be seen and identified.
Regards,

Many thanks for sharing your pics with us!
Very interesting.
But on the first pic of the last 2 ones i think thats a private purchase skull ring

odal, you are right just from the small detail pic shown here, but that is the pity with my photographic skills. In real, with a loupe, you can see the honor ring very clear (itīs the same with the second photograph).
Additionally I know the name of the man and unit and due to his rank in the photograph and the knowledge that he has gotten the honor ring some time earlier it is also clear that he is wearing his honor ring with pride (as he also shows his honor degen - which he has also gotten - proudly in the photograph).

Here is a seal ring with something inside the black stone. On the original photograph, with a loupe, it looks like a diamond inside.

nice shots! the shot with what might be a diamond,,,I think it is the black glass ring with the frosted skull in it. A ring that has a long history of before WW1 to current.

something very similar to this:

@ odal, yes, I thought the same.

@ Gaspare, you can be quite right. I wonder what you experts would find in these pics which are for others the citated "Near Miss"....

Here's another. I was told mine was made of black Onyx. I've seen these around over the years, but I only need one.

should be glass,,,Usually when still in molten state and starts the cool off period they press a steel skull die in it to leave an impression..

This went for a little under $60.US!!!
I would have went higher for a nice clean shot like this.. This photo would have been much much clearer in hand!!

Gaspare, there are a lot of different possibilities for a "near miss"......
I know the feeling for a missed photograph in auction very well!
Good luck for the next oportunity.

Gaspare, I have the Italian DAK ring shown three photos up, so I'd call that one a hit! Would've liked to have had the photo. And the helmeted fellow is certainly wearing a skull ring from the obvious outline. It may be this one. As the crossbones protrude significantly, you can probably narrow it down to 2 or 3 styles. Shame its not a touch clearer.

Oh, i think this is a Westwall ring. Glasstone, high left a helmet, diagonal the inscription and bottom right the years.
This pattern of stone:

I had been watching 2 SUPER photos on auction. They were very recognizable, one a skull ring and another a Heer ring. I wanted these photos SO bad!!!,,,but, have a family member sick I've been helping with and for whatever I missed them cry frown

So,,from now on I'm bidding as hi as I can go from the beginning and then IF someone really wants to outbid my crazy price then they are welcome to it..

This is a photo I at first liked. Had a close up sent but the ring isn't recognizable,,so deleting it off my hard drive and posting here as a near miss!
