Did you guys ever seen something like this.
It's a hunting dagger or probably cut down short sword.
My friend pulled out from burned house.
So first pictures show how it looks before and after I clean up.
The fittings are silver,but the grip is metal with the leaves design.
The detail is unbelievable

Certainly a nice looking hirschfanger, not sure of its country of origin or the age, certainly well beyond my experience, I suggest you take it to the Metropolitan Museum in NYC, they have an extensive collection of artefacts similar to this.

wow what an eye catcher hirschfanger you just posted the workmanship is ausum breath taken shame it was in a fire the ornate cross guard my lord such great early workmanship if i was to guess on a few facts here i believe it was made this way not a cut down sword and again if i was to guess it was made early 1800s and again germany or austria made this magnificent one of a kind hirschfanger now like baz 69 say the museum or before you do that trip try huston coates he knows his onions on hunting pieces and possibly identifi this great hirschfanger for you thank you so much for posting this crem de creme item god bless andy militarynut

Also how the blade is secured .
They used French coin from 1901 as a washer.
Maybe the dagger was restored in 1900s ?

Can you get a close up of the makers mark, it looks like a beehive of some sort, possibly the blade was made by Samuel Hoppe & Sohne. They were around up to 1870 -75.

This is a Samuel Hoppe & Sohne mark so the blade was made before 1875, I cannot identify the silver marks but at least we know it is German.

This is from John Walters book " The sword and bayonet makers of Imperial Germany 1871-1918".

Gary,is it possible that the blade could be Damascus?
I'm trying to slowly clean up the blade and looks like it could be.
Will show more pictures soon I will be done

Anything is possible at this time, I would not use anything abrasive on this blade as it has gone through another heat process and may not be as hard as it once was.

Hi, Fantastic piece. Have you determined the origin of the last two marks. If you haven't do you mind taking a picture of the part or parts you see them on so I can see the location.I'm not certain but they look French to me. Just trying to help. Thank you.Best!
