Hello all, I picked up this item in a local thrift store & figured it is a reproduction piece but knowing absolutely nothing about Japanese items I've put a query into a few forums in hopes of getting some info and comments on whether it is real or repro. On two of the ends there are leather pieces with ties & I believe the flag is made of cotton. The size is roughly 28 by 39 inches. As I said I figured it is a repro particularly since it seems to be in very nice shape but before it gets tossed hopefully someone can tell me definitively whether bogus or real. Thanks for any help or info you may provide Duzig(Bill)

Could be an IJN ensign, it has the off-centered sun and should have 16 rays. Black light might help, but it looks pretty new and even if it is pre-45, could have been washed with modern detergents.... I'd say wartime if original, they used this all the way back to 1870... but like everything else, has been reproduced..... I'm new to Japanese flags but so far I see no major red flags (no pun intended) with this piece... best of luck, Mike

Mike, thanks much for your reply and info. As mentioned it does look pretty new, I'll have to try as you say a black light on it also. Either way real or repro I got it for 3 bucks so no problem. That's another reason why I figured it was fake, and might still be. I thank you much and hope others might put in what info they have thanks Bill

Bill I am no expert but it looks like a repo to me. It is a Navy flag with the offset sun and should be hung with the leather tabs on the right side. MikeR

Modern repro... Rope ties are wrong material, the leather tabs are wrong material.I have owned several of this exact same flag, sold them all to a dealer at an earlier TMCA show.. I will go back to my posts over on AHF from several years ago where I posted this exact flag, have to go through over 3500 posts though

I wouldn't be so quick to judge. This looks like a patriotic flag not a true military. The corners look like pig skin to me. It stands a chance. I agree black light will help

Hello to all, I didn't realize there were more answers to my query about this flag & I want to thank everyone who has given their help. I have not yet tried using a blacklight on it & when I do I will post the results. As I mentioned I know zero about Japanese items so all your information is appreciated. Duzig(Bill)
