,,, Just wondering what you guys kept your rings in!
I use a few of the small ring cases, all pretty old [I know from late 1950s],,,and then I do have a larger / newer one..

That one above is pretty cheap cardboard and foam,,but does the trick..
This one just has long slots for the rings instead of individual spots..

I hate to give up my old cases,,,but this is pretty nice. I've seen them with the inner drawers set up for rings.. Maybe IF I could find a vintage one!
SO,, what are you guys using??

Great thread idea G! Let's see what cool ideas our members have for storing or displaying their rings! (War rooms, anyone?) As for me, my collection has inevitably grown... I have like many of u had to transfer cases, buy or create new ones, find uses for old ones... still trying to find a nice 100+ seat or so vintage box like some u have shown G but they aren't easy to find... esp as my collection is newer, but I keep an eye out, even for small period ring boxes for individual rings- I have a few now, definitely need some more... but my main holding chambers are a couple 72 seat cheap made plastic boxes and one cool old cigar- style wood case that I've laid with foam and cut the slots myself (Eileen legere told me in detail how to do it at max 2015! Thanks Eileen! I always look at the vintage stores and fleas for these too but I snagged this one for a buck from my neighbors yard sale a couple years ago- it's not real nice or neat... perfect...

Great collection ! I prefer the vintage, but the newer glass topped ones look smart.

any of you guys get cross contamination?? Where you have a horrible tarnished ring,,put it in your case,,then in a month or so you start to see your other rings turn darker ... When I get a new ring,, I brush with a stiff tooth brush type to knock off anything.. Then, only sometimes a rag damp with Windex to wipe it off really good,,,then another rag damp with fresh water and really wipe it down.. A good drying then in to the box... I've heard of these 'Silver Blankets' you lay on top on silver and keeps it tarnish free and clean. I've never used it myself....

I did not know there was such a thing as the contamination! Haven't really noticed that either, but also I have not tried to clean or anything- untouched in my boxes!

well,, not seen to much now days,,,and when seen,,its like ours,,silverplated , : But in the old days most families had real solid silver service [forks, spoons, knifes, complete tea services] These usually were 925 / Sterling.. Also in the old days was the rush to polish it all when company was coming over for a fancy dinner and the 'real' silver was brought out.. I've seen at some antique stores that when the box was opened everything was black!!! Usually from being kept open too long,,,and in areas with a lot of pollution! Sulfur is the enemy of silver!,,it will make it tarnish and depending on circumstances could actually corrode silver pieces. Silver services usually had a brown or dark cloth. Kind of feels like felt or some sort of dense [cotton?] cloth.. It is impregnated with a chemical that with just simple wiping your silver would look gleaming! I usually don't polish. But in my early days,,I'd use a stuff called 'Never-Dull'. Like cotton wads in a tin can. Used the same magic stuff on the brown cloths as it smelled exactly the same!..

I have been picking up aluminum sided handled cases at flea markets, the kind they use for poker sets, and with a little modification, makes a good case, especially if you take your rings anywhere. Also you can buy small to medium aluminum locking cases called "vaultz", they work well for sorting your collection into specific categories. I used some foam padding in the lids to keep everything in place. Not the prettiest display by far, but as I wear most of my rings that is display enough for me.

And G, I also have had the "cross contamination" effect before. All the rings in one section will start to darken together. I clean most (not all) of mine regularly to help prevent that, but that is just me. Interesting phenomenon though.

D41,,, that's a nice size,,,and seems very sturdy!
So was it empty and you made the insert for the rings?

I removed the plastic trays that held the poker chips, that went to a craft store, bought a cheap ring tray, removed the slotted foam and cut to fit my box. I probably could have done a better job with them, but it was an experiment, and it turned out rather well I think. I'm going to do a similar case for my US WW2 knife collection.

I noticed on the bands of gold rings that are down inside the ring box displays, turns black or tarnishes somehow, never knew gold could do that, what does this indicate and what can be done or anyone else see this before?
Buying rings, Odal and runic brooches and jewelry and Greifen kunst brooches.

For Lore's question above: Well almost all gold rings for men are 10k... Not much gold there and there is the cut.. The cut is what keeps the ring from wearing fast as a 18k , 24k ring wears kind of fast but rarely tarnish....
SO,, if you have a ring that tests as gold and is tarnishing it is the material they cut it with. Should be silver but wasn't during the war. Could have been anything zinc, copper etc.
- * I'm not sure you can mix ferrous and nonferrous metals,,,anyone know out there??
- posted this on another topic but post again here in case someone does a search: My other Luft rings are in their original boxes. SO I wanted to separate these , keep the Lufts together. The case is nice and small , holds just the right amount and of good quality,,,and best of all was inexpensive from good ole' eBay..............
