Mark, I'll add this little bit more from Vaclav Mericka's 1967 volume, "Orders and Decorations."

Charles Louis Frederick of Baden founded in 1812 the meritorious Order of the Z�hringen Lion in four grades. The badge is a green cross formy with straight arms, with stylized gold flames between the arms; silver for lower grades. On the central medallion in a circle is the enamelled representation of the castle of Z�hringen, and on the reverse a gold lion in a red field. The star of the Grand Cross is of silver, bearing only the central medallion with the lion in the red field; the Star of the Commander in the first class is four-pointed, of flat rays and bears the obverse of the cross on its surface. The ribbon is green with a yellow stripe at the edge.

I'm not so sure about the stylized-flame bit,
but everything else sounds kosher to me ..
