Good morning guys. I have come across a chained NSKK for sale at a reasonable price, but I have questions. The dagger itself is nice, its an early PUMA (cat within diamond mark), was this a maker of these? I was under the impression these were mostly RZM marked?

Second, the chain. The seller states there are NO markings on chain....they said its because it's an early chain, I myself of never heard of that and thought they should ALL be marked with the NSKK stamp (with umlauts over the "U") and RZM stamped?

What do you think? my gut says walk away.....

It is on Gunbroker. I emailed the seller and asked for pics of the reverse of the chain. They sent back no pics but said its an "early" chain that is not marked? here is the link to the auction:

Dave, I know that PUMA made the SS and SA, I think the dagger itself is right as rain, its the chain that has me wondering. I don't want to discredit the seller as he has some other items I might be interested in. I just never heard of an unmarked NSKK chain and wanted to run it by you guys......

Patrick,

If they won't send pics, move on.

Very early NSKK M36 chains are nickel silver & occasionally will be found without the RZM proofmarks. These chains will show a 3 x 5 link pattern rather than a 4 x 5 pattern, unlike the dagger in question.

In theory, it's possible to find a Puma SA dagger in one of these scabbards, in the event of a so-called "field upgrade", where the NSKK Mann opted to replace his M33 scabbard with the M36 scabbard, keeping the original, early manufacture dagger.

Gunbroker is hit or miss, depending on the seller. A lot of fakes abound there but some decent stuff as well. With regard to the linked dagger, I think you've been given good advice to leave this one where it is.

I would be very leery if the unmarked chain is plated steel. There are postwar chains of this type, usually marked "NSKK Korpsfuhrer" unstead of "NSKK Korpsfuhrung." This one could easily be unmarked and postwar. I would not buy anything without seeing photos first and without a firm return policy. Also, check the seller's feedback.
