Everybody ready for windows 10? Microsoft is giving it free if you reserve it and get a confirmation email from them! Anything has to be better than windows 8! I did upgrade mine to windows 8.1 but it is time for a change!

Already reserved for July 29. Still running Windows 7. Loaded 8, didn't like it, and stepped back to 7. Going to be interesting to see how their new business model will work. Just remember to keep your system restore dvds wink

I was running XP on a computer from 2003 up till a few months ago when I finally got a new computer with 8.1.
I didn't find it as baffling as everyone was saying, do miss a few things about XP that just seemed more convenient for routine tasks. Most if not all new computers don't come with restore DVDs anymore unfortunately, mine from Dell sure didn't, the one I got in 2003 had every disk for the OS, drivers and all the programs.
It is on the user to create a mirror image of the disk and use that for restore when/if necessary. I did that but am a bit in the dark just how I would use it if I had to.

I'm with Skynyrd on this. It took a while but the 8.1 is definitely usable. I actually have it acting like windows 7. I will hold off on 10 until it is debugged.

Vern I didn't like windows 8 but when I upgraded to 8.1 it was a lot easier but according to Microsoft windows 10 will be something like windows 7! Doug, most computers now days do not come with a recovery disc but has a recovery partition on the HDD to make a copy of the recovery disc or discs and it highly recommended to make them when you first get a new computer in case of a HDD failure or a bad virus that can ruin the HDD! If needed to be restored you just insert the disc or discs and restore it back to factory condition.

I thought Windows 8 was a waste. By the time 8.1 was available, info on Windows 10 was already leaking out as a total redesign with Windows 7 GUI, so I decided to wait.

Sorry guys, I should have said "create and keep your system restore dvds" wink These are full system image discs that you can create from the Control Panel/Backup and Restore window. Before installing a new system, it's a good idea to create both a System Image and a System Repair Disc, and backup your files. If you need to, you can use them to go back to your original configuration.

Windows 10 free upgrade notification came in yesterday. I did the download and install immediately. The download, install, and configuration took about an hour plus another hour to get everything fully up and running. As usual for a new version from Microsoft, device drivers were the main issue. Windows installed a generic driver for my GForce 650 graphics card and had no drivers for my Canon printer and Canon Scanner. I was able to refresh the driver for the GForce with the Device Manager but had to load new drivers for the printer and scanner. No one had Windows 10 drivers for either device but the Windows 8.1 64 bit drivers from Canon worked fine. None of the 32 bits drivers would load. On the software side, most applications worked fine but had to upgrade a few utility programs and the PhotoShop software with the 64 bit versions. Windows 10 doesn't like 32 bit software wink Probably a few more programs around that will have to be upgraded in the future. On the positive side, everything runs noticeably faster. On an interesting note, in the System Recovery menu, there is a notice that you can restore back to your old copy of Windows for 30 days. After 30 days, that option is no longer available.

Vern; I'm not really clued up about installing windows systems, still using Vista which was loaded on the PC I bought back in 2009. An upgrade to 7 came with the package. Is 7 a stable system and ok for a while? as I fear that MS will drop support for Vista in the near future.

Yes, I was running Windows 7 Home Professional until the Windows 10 upgrade came out (I did not like 8 or 8.1 at all!). It's a good stable operating system.

Microsoft's support policy operates at 2 levels, Mainstream and Extended. Mainstream consists of updates, upgrades, and enhanced features as free updates. Extended support consists of security updates only. If you go to the Microsoft website, you'll find that Mainstream support for Vista ended April 10, 2012. Security updates will continue to be released for Vista until April 11, 2017. Microsoft ended Mainstream support for Windows 7 as of January 13, 2015, but will continue security updates for Windows 7 until January 14, 2020. Windows 8.1 Mainstream support will run until 2018 with security updates for 5 years after that.

Something else to think about, at the moment, the upgrade to Windows 10 is free to registered owners of Vista, Windows 7, and Windows 8/8.1. That offer will expire sometime in the near future wink

Barry,

If it works for you, stick with what you've got. Your PC will die eventually and you just start again. Just make copies of your important files and keep them separate. Today the easiest way are "thumb drives" as they have tremendous capacity at reasonable prices ... especially on sale.

A big problem with new operating systems is old but useful software you might have. Some is a real pain to re-instal.

Yes, Windows 7 is great.

As for a free upgrade to W10, I suspect it might be worth exactly what you pay for. Especially if you cannot got back after 30 days.

I still have my Windows 7, service pack, and system restore dvds. With those, I can always reload. If you do go back to an older system through the System Recovery menu, your free upgrade to Windows 10 is gone. Just remember, Windows 11 will be out in another 3 years and it will probably be as big a mess as Windows 8 wink

Just did the upgrade today, so far I notice nothing amiss. It is a new 64 bit system so my driver conflicts will likely be minimal.

If you do run into driver problems, go the manufacturer's website and download the Windows 8.1 64 bit drivers for your device. The ones I've needed resolved my issues and the devices came up and functioned just like they should wink

Video, sound, printer drivers all working like nothing happened. Really haven't noticed much different, they got that talking assistant like Siri seems like it might be useful. Seems potentially intrusive with all kinds of location/info/report requests. I guess thats the norm for these days, I opted out of most of those.

Yes, Windows 10 is set up to work on smart phones and tablets in addition to personal computers. Supposed to give you the same interface across all platforms and with the cloud connections you can access your data from anywhere. Cortana works like Siri on the iPhones if set up correctly and it works with the mic on a webcam. Now just need to replace my monitor with a touch screen wink

I never in my life thought I'd talk to Siri, I'd see guys talking into their phones asking questions and I'd think "sheesh, what a girly man", but I find myself doing it every now and then, preferably when no one is looking. Can come in handy, no doubt about it. I tried Carina and my questions were answered with a pop up web page, so its kinda like voice googling more or less. I tried some goofy questions like "so what are you wearing tonight baby" and got no responses, apparently is not as sophisticated as Siri, who likely would have rattled off a cocky answer to that.

Only thing so far I don't like about 10 is it hijacked all my file associations, pics movies ect that I had set to be open with certain apps are now opened by microsoft apps.
Can be changed back no doubt, once I get aggravated enough to find out how. Pic app actually looks pretty nice, but it doesn't tell you the pic name like my other one, a handicap and deal breaker for me.

If you click on "Settings", "System", "Default apps", and "Default apps by file type", you can change all the file associations at one time. Just be aware that there are a large number of file types wink

One thing that bothered me is that the top bar for new windows was always white. This is a new feature in Windows 10 that allows the application to set the top bar color, with white being the default. Since very few apps use this feature, all the windows show a white top bar which blends in with the rest of the window and makes the top bar function keys hard to locate (at least for my old eyes). A quick search on the internet located a file called "Colored Theme" which allows you to set the top bar to the color of your choice. It's a simple install and made a big difference for me.

Thanks, Dave. I will stick with Vista as long as I can, and keep all my files backed up.

Not to come off sounding like a Microsoft tout, but if you are running any of the older Windows versions, you should see a noticeable improvement in processing speed with Windows 10. This would include XP, Vista, and some versions of Windows 7 and 8. Most of these versions run in 32 bit native mode while Windows 10 runs in 64 bit native mode. My 5 year old quad core computer had a 78% rating compared to current PCs under Windows 7. I was already starting to look into buying a new computer in the next 6 months. After installing Windows 10, it scores a 92% rating. To me, that means I won't worry about doing a computer hardware upgrade for another year or two, and the software upgrade was free.

Now there is a method to their madness in giving away the upgrade. Microsoft has studied the Apple online business model selling music, movies, and apps. Windows 10 "allows" you to easily set up an account and browse their store for apps, games, and movies. Many are free to download, but quite a few are not. And just about all offer extensions and special feature packages for a fee. Just like Adobe replaced the stand-alone Photoshop software with the Creative Cloud online monthly subscription service, vendors are looking for a continuing income stream instead of a one time purchase. This will undoubtedly be the wave of the future, so get it while you can wink

I really like Windows 10 - it's fast, stable, and works great on my Surface 3. I also installed it on my laptop - no problems whatsoever. If your computer is 64-bit capable and a relatively good name brand system, I think you're going to like it. Microsoft Edge is a bit quirky though - takes some getting used to.

I'm still waiting for my Windows 10 to be installed... The little icon has been there for two months now but I can't seem to install the program on my laptop.

I installed Windows 10 over the weekend, rather it installed itself. It indicated I should go away and it would call me if it needed me. A bit later it was fully installed. All I had to do was tell it I did not want its new browser. It asked what browser I wanted and then everything was back where I wanted it.
Looks like the did it right to me.

For the privacy conscious.
Can't get around it these days, so many things record movements/voice. But doesn't hurt to try to minimize it.

Microsoft's Windows 10 is recording your voice and your key strokes - here's how to turn it off
