A friend of mine has this hammered naval scabbard and has become aware of some controversy over the hammered scabbards with a rear screw instead of on the sides.

Here are some photos. Can I get the opinions please.

Jim,
IMO it is a reproduction. To me it looks like an attempt at a Holler scabbard. Taking aside the fact that there are a number of things wrong to be a Holler, the quality and workmanship is simply not there. There is poor definition of the components. The gilt finish is funky, uneven using some cheap process. The chape is poorly soldered on. Look at the carrying ring lugs. They aren't even the same type. Holler was a fine company and would never let this kind of work go out. Again, my opinion only.
PM me and I will fill you in on the rest.
Best. Rick

... Vic and I agreed that these scabbards are not what we want for our collections.

Just an opinion.

Jim,

you know your stuff, is there anything we don't know? Some "... unknown unknowns" ? :-)

Best;
H.

No, it is as I have stated. I posted this for a friend of mine and I want as many opinions as I can get.

I never did study German daggers to the extent you guys have, so this is a good lesson for me and I suspect other collectors will learn something as well.

I will tell you that 5 years ago when I first saw this I thought the scabbard was ok.

I agree with others as well. A post war Höller scabbard.

Best, Oleg.

Thanks Oleg.

We have listed this on worlddaggers as a questionable scabbard in the gallery..
