I'll let the etched collectors give there opinion on this. I sure like the Friedrich Herder Trade mark.

Can't comment on the etch, but it looks to be Imperial three rivit with the black finish.
Is the blade blued or polished finish that has dulled over time? Hard to tell from the pics.

I like the horse artillery etch and the dedication to an artillery unit.

The only thing that gives me pause is the Eickhorn type fleur de lys borders on an F Herder marked blade.

Is the horse etch sort of well-detailed for the Imperial time period? I'm not saying that Imperial etches weren't detailed but this pattern seems more like a 3R etch. Not an indictment but more of an observation.

Billy:

I have seen horse artillery etch on TR bayonets and on earlier (Weimar and WW1) sabers.

If we were talking about this as a TR etch, I would be even more concerned about the fleur dl lys border.

Here is a horse artillery etch on a Holler bayonet.

John,

Yeah, you're right now that I think about it, I have seen horse & artillery etches on Imperial swords that looked quite similar. You do have a point with the fleur de lys borders on a nonEick blade.

I tend to agree with John concerning the Eickhorn style etch with the fleur de lys end. Clearly this etching template has been cut short to fit on the bayonet and it is very poorly executed IMHO. The KS98 bayonet is an original Imperial style with the three rivet grip but the etch has multiple red flags for me. First, it is the wrong style for Herder. Second, is that it is poorly executed and placed since parts of the detail are missing. Third, the obverse is upside down from the normally seen configuration.

Three strikes and you are out for me.

Yep, look at the bottom etch border just underneath the cannon.

"poor etching?"

Yes, notice that the ends of the fleur de lys ends are diferent on one side than the other. Also, there is a piece missing just below the 55. The fuzzy edges of the etch are not straight along the sides of the blade as if the template slipped. Not what I would expect of a period etch from Herder.
