Just picked this piece up in a flea market in PA, I looked it over for a long time before purchasing making sure that the hanger was original and not something added on later, first I have seen of this type of hanger, the knife is not in the best condition and has lost its leather washer and suffers from a bit of sharpening to the blade, the diamond has taken a battering in the past as well, the motto though is nice and clear, the scabbard is the anodised type rather than painted. The leather is connected to the scabbard with 2 hollow rivets.

Hello Gary,

Interesting piece: the riveting of the scabbard shell onto the hanger appears to have been done with a machine. So it does not look like a job done by the HJ member himself...
Could be an early unofficial hanger or maybe the HJ boy had a family member owning a leather store?

I have seen many unofficial hangers on HJ's, but never one like this.

Thanks for showing it.

Herman

Thanks for your comments.

I looked long and hard at this piece and as I said thought it original to the piece and the more I look at it the more comftable I am with it, when I look under the small piece of leather around the front of the scabbard there is a cleaner section where the leather has rubbed on the scabbard, the rear grip plate is extremely clean where it has been protected by the leather hanger and everything fits well, nothing seems out of place and everything is in similar condition, you can see that it was worn with the wear patterns to the rear of the leather hanger and the leather smells old. When you take all of this into account especially with the early date of the piece I believe it to be a nice and unusual combination.
