Hi all just picked up a 1917 USN thumbprint dog tag. Can anyone tell me more about them?

Thank you Vern! That's a great document! I never knew anything about the process, I'm honored to own one of these amazing pieces of history! Mike

Is it true that the Monel metal was the same material as the ships propeller was made out of?

Do a web search for Monel and the Wiki article lists common applications. It's an expensive nickel alloy with excellent corrosion resistance, but subject to extreme Galvanic corrosion if in contact with other metals (steel) in salt water.
