Dear fellow collectors,

lets start with a short introduction into the history of the Alcoso company.
The head of the company, Alexander Coppel from Solingen, was born in 1866.
As a studied lawyer he entered into the family company in 1896, they produced steel blades of all kinds. In a second plant in the city of Hilden they produced steel-tubes.

For the centennial of the company in 1921 the company donated two Million Reichsmark, a remarkable sum shortly before the inflation in Germany
.
During the Nazi period the company was aryanized in 1936 through force. Alexander Coppel died in the Ghetto Theresienstadt in 1942.

Let us have a look on the 1938 pattern dagger, a second model does not exist, because German naval daggers are dating back to the beginning of the 19th Century.

What is typically for Alcoso is the finial flower motif in the centre of the reverse crossguard. This motif was used by other companies too, but only Alcoso used it into the Nazi period.

The blade etching is slightly faint but elegantly made and detailed.
The reed-bundle pommel was changed after 1938 in according to the newly introduced regulation for an eagle pommel. The eagle pommel from the side - angular swaz shield - is typically for these later replacement eagles.

On this 1938 pattern dagger an Imperial portepee is still present, which is remarkable.

It is interesting to compare this 1938 pattern dagger with an Alcoso 1921 pattern, so Id thought to introduce both daggers in one post.

Thanks for looking.

Best;
Flyingdutchman

Hermann,
It is also interesting that the scabbard design changed little. Can one date these daggers by the maker mark design? Thank you for sharing these fine examples. Early Alcoso daggers seem rather scarce IMO.
Best regards, Rick

As Hermann mentioned, other manufactures used the flower motif but only Alcoso retained this design throughout the TR. Here is an Eickhorn example, 1929 pattern manufactured about 1929-30. By the early 1930's Eickhorn had retooled their cross guard so that the fouled anchor motif appeared on the obverse and reverse. Rick

Serge,

not sure whether your dagger has an Alcoso scabbard, seems to be from another maker.

I agree with Hermann, the scabbard of Serge's dagger is a typical WKC product.

By the way, beautiful daggers you show here Hermann!

Danny
