Hi Fisher, the #2 and an "A" in a circle is undocumented..but yet still authentic. Documented tang markings range from "A9" - "A25" I have seen your number a couple of times..and is hard to put a face on it as these were also encountered on CH SS Blade examples. Hopefully one day the producer or forger will surface and the identity known. Regards Larry

Fisher,

Tang marks are not fully understood. We can associate some marks with some makers, but that same maker can have different marks.

Tang marks are created when the blade is forged. The mold in which the steel billet is enclosed has markings in the area where the tang will be. When the hammer hits the mold with great force, the steel of the tang will have those marks. These marks can represent IMO:

- Who owns the mold
- The mold number. They wear out and must be replaced
- Who is the blade is being forged for
- Which forge is making the blade

Despite large numbers of manufacturers of daggers, the number of forges is relatively small. Hope this helps
