Sadly no pictures from the trip originating in Frankfurt to Berlin in 1979, but several memories of in route drinking beer, & wine and clearing East Germany checkpoints. Flashing flag orders and military IDs...Prost! Visiting East Berlin..... eerie back then.

What Train did you ride on? Surely it wasn't the U.S. Duty Train?

Yep, in the late 70s they had sleepers and allowed food and drink on board. Biggestt problem was arranging for flag orders out of Frankfurt over the phone.....long wait.

Snacks and sleepers sure, but alcohol was a big no no on US trains lol. How did you get away with it without getting caught?lol

Not sure, remember asking my buddy for a cork screw for what turned out to be a screw cap (fine vintage year from the class VI). Thinking back, I guess we didn't have beer with us. A memorable trip for sure. A most unique experience, not to be "enjoyed" any longer.
