I was on the P-38 forum last week and they started that topic on the p-38 and the PP& PPK. A lot of very nice and hard to find guns posted. I thought it might be fun to do it here as well. Anything from hard to find trade marks, stag handles, etches, etc. with a brief description, dress bayonets to combat bayos.

I know it will be hard for some of you guys to pick just one, so maybe post two smile

Wow very nice bayonets so far guys, keep em coming. Haven't seen any combat bayos yet, I don't know a lot about them. I know some of you guys collect them and it would be nice to know more about some of the hard to find ones. And a little about why, maybe TM or late 1945? Production numbers?

Also no fire bayonets yet.

Really great topic for the thread, Steve.

This is my short model Polizei bayonet by Holler, pre-war aluminum hilt. The blade is triple etched, one side reads Zur Erinnerung an die Ausbildungszeit 1938-1939.

Steve,

Billy showed his rare etched FW bayonet. Here is an example of a combat style bayonet in the form of a Wurttemberg Polizei S98/05. These bayonets are quite scarce in that Wurttemberg had fewer rural policemen (Landgendarmerie Kommando) than say Prussia or Saxony.

This bayonet is a reworked Imperial S98/05 and has the expected modifications such as a slotted press stud and original unslotted screwbolts along with blueing. It is also "LK" property marked on the blade as well as being numbered.

Posting late is to blame, I forgot the money shot - blade obverse with owner's name, please excuse the poor lighting & horrendous photography skills.

This bayonet is pictured in an excellent reference book, have any of you seen it before?

It is generally known the various manufacturers of the German S84/98 T3 did not produce this same pattern as an extraseitengewehr. In most cases a lighter, polished S84/98 was manufactured in a myriad of minor variants and grades. However, some few service models were manufactured not for privat purchase, but on special order.

The S84/98 T3 pictured is such a bayonet. This is a "commercial" pattern without any markings. The bayonet has a factory nickle finish. The scabbard is also unmarked, and finished in high-polish blue. Bayonet came with a blue felt spacer and T/O slot insert pad. This bayonet was likely a special order contracted for in a very small quantity by one of the German service branches (I think likely Luftwaffe) for a special honor or guard detail.

I have only observed one other example, which I have as well. It is missing the flashguard, and shows much evidence of having been mounted on and off a rifle. I suspect the guard was removed because the bright nickle finish caused glare to be reflected into the soldier's face when the bayonet was mounted to his rifle, and the weapon held at the "present arms" position. It is identical to the example pictured, with the exception of having only the date of "40" on the base of the blade spine. Machining and other characteristics indicate both bayonets were made by the same firm and at the same time.

With such a bright finish, it is difficult for the camera capture the detail of the bayonet. Lines are all crisp & sharp...this is not a rework, refinished, or post-WW2 revision...

Denny, thanks for the pics. I am pleased to hear there is now a third example reported. One feature I have noted is the way the press-stud button is finish-machined. In the last photo I posted, the surface of the button is very flat & smooth with a almost sharp edge to it. My other example is finished identically. From the photos it appears your bayonet shares this feature as well.

Here is another oddball. This is as close to a S84/98 T3 extraseitengewehr I have seen. Measurements are very close to that of the service bayonet and weight exceeds it. Grips appear to be heavy, checkered plastic with S98/05 type spanner nuts & screws. Finish is factory nickle & there is a faded felt insert in the T/O slot. My take is this is late Weimar period/early 3rd Reich. The marking on the crossguard looks to be a upside-down "L" with the number "2" or the wrong stamp was used and the marking was to be "12". Scabbard has the thick throat & retention screw on the side typical for that period:

Well, thought I would post one more unusual variant since the subject line was rarest bayonet. All those I have posted can be considered scarce to rare. This example is a German rework of a Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Cie 1915 S98/05aA into a S84/98 configuration. Very few of these bayonets are seen...likely because the extent of the rework did not justify the effort to perform it. Both bayonet & scabbard bear matching rework serial #6, and I have seen one other example with a low, 2-digit number.

The scabbard is unusual. It resembles a "bloated" one for the S84/98 T3. Because of the original downward angle of the S98/05 blade a bit more room was required to accommodate the cut-down blade. The scabbard has the external throat on the spring guide and retention screw on the edge of the scabbard. Since it was originally dated 1915, the flashguard may have been added during WW1 or at the time of rework. The blade itself has been heavily modified.

How about a Weimar period Police KS98 made by Paul Weyersberg? This bayonet was issued to a few Police organizations before Hitler's nationalization of the Police in 1936.
It has a 16 1/2" blade bearing the early "Paweco" trademark, while the press stud and mortise are non-functional. These are occasionally seen with the Nazi Police insignia on the grip. Enjoy...

Some really interesting and rare bayonets have been posted. It is good to see these bayonets being brought out of the closet to show in this thread. Keep up the good work!

Here is a nice private purchase (although it does have armorer property markings on it) S71 bayonet marked to a Baden Artillery Unit. The blue panel blade is something scarcely seen on Extra-Seitengewehre as it was an extra cost option.

Here is an interesting police clamshell bayonet. It has the Eickhonr double oval serrated tail with CE trademark. But, the pommel is not you rtypical police pommel.

Denny,

I have the same long KS98 by Weyersberg that you do except mine is numbered "85" on the back of the guard where yours is numbered "112". These are interesting Polizei bayonets... I just wish I knew what departments issued them. I think I have seen one with "Tr.#" markings as well.

John,

I am glad that you posted your Eickhorn Polizei clamshell. I notice it has a painted steel scabbard with a separate drag attached but no nickeled throat piece as is correct. I have a couple of these transitional bayonets. Both of mine have the earlier back to back squirrels trademark so made with some NOS parts it seems. One of mine is Weimar and the other is transitional with the clamshell removed and the new 1936 grip eagle added. One has a separate drag and the other is simply painted to appear to have a drag.

These are very interesting Police bayonets showing the Germans never wasting anything.

Andy: Thanks for your thoughts and additional serial number info on the S98/05 to S84/98 rework. Hard to imagine they made that many as so few are seen.
Denny: Though I don't really collect outside the service bayonet realm, that long KS pattern is a rare one I know, and was one I learned early on to grab should I ever run across one at a good price!
John: I noticed your short police clamshell is also a very scarce bird, and sporting the equally rare A. Fischer Berlin C2 1937 composite frog...

I think my wish list just got a lot bigger, so many wonderful bayonets posted so far.

I thought myself how hard it would be to post just one because we all have more than one favorite I kind of had it narrowed down to two myself.

George, I seen on the police clamshells you posted the one scabbard looked all metal painted black with plated upper and lower. It looks very close to one I have. I add some pic's.

Steve,

Yes, I have seen this done on early bayonet scabbards by Eickhorn, and probably others. They seemed to use up new old stock (NOS) parts in an attempt to waste nothing. Never say never when talking about these early and transitional pieces.

Hello
it is very difficult to choose a favorite bayonet in a collection of different bayonets. I have decided to show you these 2 bayonets.
A narrow pattern bayonet from Wuppertal Reichsbahn and a Customs private purchase bayonet (no maker mark).
Regards
Alain

Here is one of mine I'll post,
I think this one would be the hardest one for me to replace with another one like it,
It's a full bird short and monogrammed pioneer type. This is a case where a bit of rarity will overcome its condition for a collector. Well for me anyway smile I think this one is one of my favorites.

A nice pair of blades! I really like that "thin-blade" service pattern piece. I know another collector whom has one "in white", but the RBD frog & knot with yours really makes it special. My assumption is only the earliest Reichbahn S84/98 T-3 "thin-blade" pieces were "in white", and the later ones were all blued...

Steve,

A full-beak, short bladed Pioneer is an extremely hard piece to find. With the pommel monogram, this one is "out of the park".

Thanks John and Denny,

Denny I like the odd ones, here's a monogrammed E pack. Plating wearing thin from being disturbed after monogram. I don't see it on dress bayonets very often, but a lot more often seen on swords.
